For as many '80s and '90s cars as we cover here at Super Street, you'd think we'd get ahold of more Mitsubishi Starions (and Conquests) and Eagle Talons (and Eclipses), but the truth is, there aren't a ton of these floating around. So, when we do come across something as rare and well-built as the two vehicles in this story, we jump at the opportunity and you, the fans, seem to appreciate it, as both of these articles generated quite a bit of interest when they hit our social channels.
We like to take two nicely done vehicles and put them up against one another in friendly competition to see which you prefer, and this time around both share a similar cross-branded background, both were very popular during their era, and both are sorely missed, as we don't see nearly enough of these in current times. A star and a mythical horse combine to make the "Starion," or perhaps it was supposed to be a shortened version of "star of Orion," based on Mitsubishi's space fascination that led to model names like "Star Wagon;" either way, the name should not be forgotten. In the '80s, the Starion built a name for itself as a sporty, affordable coupe that made its way to the U.S., later accompanied by a Stateside variant, the Conquest, under the Plymouth/Chrysler/Dodge branding effort. Boasting a front-engine, RWD layout and, in the case of some models, a bulked-up profile with widened fenders, it was athletic and user-friendly. An enthusiast favorite, its later model front mount intercooler was often targeted by budget racers with "sticky fingers."
The fact that you rarely find these roaming the streets anymore makes Mikie Sorrell's homebuilt version that much more special. Add to that the fact that his silver "star horse" remains in outstanding condition some three decades later. The original G54B engine was modified, blown up, fully built and then the block cracked, and rather than opting for a 4G63 swap, Mikie decided on a Toyota 1JZ complete with a single Borg Warner S360, and a matching R154 transmission. A slightly modified front bumper and canards, homebuilt rear diffuser and a backdated Starion hood are the only visual changes—keeping the spirit of this '80s sportscar completely intact, right down to the factory, hand-polished wheels. The younger audience might not be aware, but in the mid-'90s, the Eagle Talon, along with its almost identical siblings, the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Plymouth Laser, was a major force to be reckoned with. When import drag racing was at an all-time high, rivalries erupted, as these cars and their owners constantly battled with the Honda enthusiast camp. AWD versions, like this Talon TSI that Alex Ruiz has heavily modified, were often victorious after just the first two gears, often jumping car lengths ahead of the competition from the start.
This version has been widened and adorned with plenty of custom carbon-fiber touches and updated with a respray of OEM silver paint and a black roof. Under the hood you'll find an Evo III heart that, with the help of E85, bangs out over 640hp. The engine bay is very well organized and the overall look of the car is modern and aggressive, without stepping too far away from the style that defined these cars in the '90s.
