One Man Walks The Line Between Business And Obsession

For those of you that follow the JDM Honda scene on the Internet you've most certainly heard of ICB Motorsport. Chances are that you have not only heard of ICB, but you've purchased plenty of parts from them. At some point during the transaction you have probably spoken with Matt, the owner of both ICB Motorsport and this beautiful CR-X in front of you. But just like the rest of us, Matt's introduction to the scene was a humble one.

Back in 2000 Matt's interest in JDM parts was sparked and he began locating parts in Japan to collect and sell. Initially it was just a hobby, but that hobby quickly turned into a full time job. In 2002 Matt's garage was no longer large enough to accommodate his operation and ICB Motorsport was established in a modest 750 sq/ft building in Arcadia, California. The name ICB is derived from Ye's favorite drink, Kirin Ichiban beer.

Skip forward several years and ICB Motorsport is a serious force to be reckoned with in the Honda scene. I've known Matt personally for years since his shop in Arcadia and became good friends when he moved to my former home of Arizona. A few months ago when I went back to visit some friends in AZ, I took the time to stop by to shoot and talk to Matt about his CR-X.

The first thing I wanted to know was why, with almost unlimited access to cars, he chose the CR-X. Matt replied "Socichiro Honda once said 'the value of life can be measured by how many times your soul has been deeply stirred' and this CR-X stirred me at first sight. The CR-X is a car that I wanted to own in high school but I couldn't afford. My car is a true representation of my business, 'the pursuit of true JDM."

The kit on the car is 100% authentic Mugen. Chances are you instantly recognized this kit, but more than likely all the other examples you have seen were replicas. The PRO.2 kit is one of, if not the, most knocked off kits in the industry - and understandably so. It's the holy grail of all CR-X parts and one of the most infamous Mugen parts in existence. The fully intact kit, stickers, bumper lens covers and all, turns the CR-X into an automotive masterpiece.

The car was purchased in nearly the same condition you see before you in 2006 from the original owner in Japan. The only thing Matt has changed at this point is the wheels. After years of searching when Matt came across the car of his dreams, in the color he wanted with the Mugen kit every CR-X owner would kill for he knew he couldn't sleep on it. I'm sure Matt will continue to modify the CR-X adding more Mugen parts and cleaning up anything that is below his standards, but for now he is basking in the glory that is 100% original non-restored factory goodness.
