Toyotas, especially since (and during) the '80s, have had the most loyal owners. Once a person gets a Toyota, it spreads like wildfire and soon the whole family starts driving Toyotas. And from then on their children grow up owning Toyotas as well. It's a cycle that I've seen over and over again. Whether it's the reliability, the styling or the performance, the Escoto twin brothers have had a long affair with Toyotas. It all started with their father and his '76 Corolla Liftback. After that, both brothers have owned just about every Corolla of the '80s.
It's no surprise that they chose to build the AE86, the last and best of the RWD Corollas. I can't tell if these two were dressed the same when they were kids or not, but they definitely tried to keep their Corollas looking different.
Billy Escoto has the blue '86 coupe with the Trueno front end. Walter Escoto has the silver '85 hatchback with the Levin front end. The coupe sports the Run Free bumper while the hatch rocks the Vertex. Both cars both roll on 18'' fully polished JLine wheels but again both are different - two-piece on the coupe and three-piece on the hatch.
Under the hood, each Corolla set themselves apart from each other and just about any other Corolla in the world. With a ton of fabrication and work, Billy shoehorned a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six 2JZ-GTE (as in a Toyota Supra engine) into the small Corolla engine bay. The twin-turbo system wasn't dropped to save room; it was replaced with a fat single PT67 turbo for monster power, similar to what most MKIV Supra owners do.
"If you look at the shifter you would think that it's a five-speed manual. But what you don't realize is it's a ratchet shifter for my TH350 automatic," says Billy. Manual transmissions can hardly hold the power of the 2JZ down the 1320 and like many others Billy mated the indestructible TH350 to the 2JZ to ensure the 18'' wheels put down all 480whp.
Walter also didn't think four cylinders was good enough for his Corolla. Instead of adding two cylinders, he doubled it and went with a 4.0-liter V8 1UZ-FE from a Lexus LS400. Originally featured in the '06 September issue of Super Street, Walter has now officially gone over the top adding twin HKS GT2835R turbos to the V8.
"Knowing that this swap was going to become more popular (after the first feature), we decided to take that extra step to stand out with a custom-made one-off twin-turbo kit in our V8 Corolla," Walter explains. He also added the fender flares, carbon doors, Levin front end, and did a color change since the last time we saw it. We thought it was pretty crazy then, now it's simply insane.
We're sure more will continue to change with these cars as both brothers have a track record for hot rodding Corollas and it doesn't seem they'll be quitting anytime soon. Billy and Walter Escoto have, and always will be, true Corolla owners.
