If you put us on an island where the only industries are coffee, macadamia nuts, pineapples and honeymoons, chances are we wouldn’t be car guys. Our occupations or hobbies might be professional wedding crashers or sunscreen appliers. But in Maui, a braddah named Michael Egdamin proves us wrong. On an island with only 100k people, Mike represents one of few hardcore Honda enthusiasts.
Since ’87, the former shuttle driver turned traffic controller has owned two Hondas, both featured in magazines. The first was a ’88 Civic hatch in Lowrider (we’ll ignore this one), and the second, a slick ’92 VX from our Feb ‘06 issue. The white EG showcased a 216hp B18C1 swap in a candy red engine bay with Spoon aero parts and many more goodies.
But with that car sold and gone, Mike couldn’t stay away from the game very long. He bought his daughter two Hondas and eventually stumbled onto this ’92 Si for his new project. Mildly-modified by the previous owner, he stripped out everything to start fresh with his own Hawaiian flava.
Now five years in the making, the owner Mike has built the motor for drag racing beginning with a LS/VTEC swap. Machined by local shop Benson’s, the bottom-end was bored and stroked with 84mm JE pistons and an LS crank resulting in a 2.0 liter. The ported B16 head received Jun stage 3 cams and Portflow valve springs and titanium retainers. Putting power to the front wheels was a GSR five-speed upgraded with a Type R LSD and Tilton twin-disc.
Because there weren’t any dynos on Maui, Mike put his EG on a boat to Oahu and had it tuned by 1320 Performance. The result was 235whp and 155 lb-ft. With these numbers Mike forecasts high-11 passes on his next journey to the track.
The rest of the car sported some of the finest JDM parts accessible—many of which took years to collect. Mike highlighted the J’s Racing swag which he saved since ’05. This included the front lip, carbon duct, rear wing and oil and radiator caps. The Mugen MF10Ls are also a very rare sight on the island.
