One common email we receive floats along the lines of something like this: “Dear Super Street, I own a (fill in obscure car of choice here) and never see these featured in your magazine. Hondas suck! Feature my (fill in obscure car of choice here)! Signed, (fill in your name here). PS— Hondas suck! Why are you such Honda fanboys?” Usually the “obscure car of choice” is a Pontiac Sunfire, any generation Mitsubishi Eclipse or a Z32 300ZX. Well, we’re here to grant one of your dreams to come true. Behold: a Z32 that anyone can get down to, brought to you by the kind folks at C&Y Sports.
What’s C&Y Sports, you ask? It’s a shop based right outside of Nagoya, Japan, and they’ve made a name for themselves by taking cars and swapping them with all sorts of engines. Their latest happens to be this Z32 Fairlady Z, or what you know best as the 300ZX. The owner came to them after exhausting the stock twin-turbo VG30—probably something the few of you Z32 owners can relate to personally. Well, C&Y had a nice plan ready to set into place: 2JZ-GTE power, because apparently RB26 and SR20 conversions are played-out in Japan.
Now, purists can cry all they want—the trick here is to keep calm; it’s not just a Toyota-powered Nissan—it’s a blend of perfection from two varying teams. The 2JZ is, as you know, epic, and can handle tons of power with a stock bottom end. But the owner didn’t just want tons of power; he wanted that and a good insurance policy set in place. So C&Y located a donor motor, stripped it down and rebuilt it piece-by-piece, using a balanced crankshaft, HKS connecting rods and oversized pistons —the cylinder walls were also bored and honed, increasing overall displacement to 3.1-liters. The head was then ported and polished before being fitted with HKS’ 272-degree cams and adjustable pulleys. After more consultation with the owner, C&Y devised a unique turbo setup for the 2J: for street use, a Garrett T04S sits on the HKS manifold, and when it’s time to hit the track, they swap in a slightly larger T04Z unit. The smaller turbo yields roughly 550hp while the bigger snail pushes 700hp at max boost; either setup puts a smile on our faces.
Since this is an extremely customized job, C&Y fabricated a lot of one-off pieces, like the intake plenum; it, too, uses unconventional pieces, like a Nissan Q45 throttle body to suck in more air. Large (and we’re talking Peter North equivalents here) 1,000cc injectors bring plenty of fuel in to the mix, which is controlled via a HKS F-Con V Pro; its custom map gives the engine a massive 578lb-ft at 6,000rpm, so as you can guess, low end power is pretty freakin’ awesome. But besides the parts, the biggest task in finishing this project was figuring out how to make the engine fit. Good thing the VG30DETT is a wide engine, but it was hood clearance that caused the biggest headache. Even with custom engine mounts, the 2JZ still managed to stick out a little, so they had to have a new hood made so it would clear the valve cover; Mission was called upon for the job and crafted this piece out of fiberglass.
With the new powerplant, the owner started to take on more grip sessions at tracks across Japan, so C&Y knew that the Z had to be fitted with capable dampers; they chose an adjustable set of coilovers from Ennepetal. A Trust big brake kit with 6-pot front calipers and 4-pots for the rear enables the heavy Z32 to stop as well as it can get on the speed! To improve aerodynamics, they looked back to Mission, upgrading the body with a widebody kit, carbon fiber canards, a rear diffuser and a SARD carbon GT wing to add more downforce. 18" Volk TE37s are a timeless set of wheels that not only look great on this older chassis, but are strong enough to endure plenty of track time; they’ve been equipped with sticky Hankook TD Z221 semi-slicks as well.
Swing the doors open on this targa-topped Z32 and you’ll be thrust back to the future with an ageless cabin, one of the best from the ‘90s era Nissan family. It sees updated enhancements with the Recaro RS-G seats and Tanida steering wheel, but take a closer look at the gauge cluster—it’s been custom-fitted with a Defi Super Sports Cluster. C&Y also spot-welded the chassis around the window and door openings, and also fabbed up a custom 7-point cage to help stiffen it up, especially with the open top.
This project surprised us in so many ways. First, it was a car you’ve been hounding us to feature, and second, it’s done so well, we couldn’t pass it up. Cherish this moment, remember it well—you may not see anything quite like it in some time. Or will you?
