When it comes to building a car with stance, there are no rules. It doesn’t matter what make or model the car is. With an imagination and some hard work, you can build something that’ll drop panties no matter what it is…which brings us to this Bimmer. This rare ’71 BMW 2800CS belongs to Mike Burroughs, founder and owner of the popular blog StanceWorks. This isn’t our typical feature car but it broke our necks and seemed more than appropriate for this issue.

Mike became famous (or infamous to some) for his handiwork known as “Rusty Slammington”—a BMW E28 that featured a chopped roof, super-slammed stance, rusted exterior and 24-karat gold Ronal Racing wheels. It was one of the most talked about cars around the world at one point, but it burned down in a garage fire last year. Eager to let his creativity run wild again, he found this 40-plus-year-old BMW E9 on Craigslist. You’d think a car at this age would be busted and broken, but after a short flight to the owner’s home, he discovered the seamless body and interior of this E9 was pretty much flawless. Mike drove the car four hours home—a pleasant surprise considering he was prepared to trailer it.

To start the Stanceworks transformation, the E9 was lowered with a static drop and fitted with 18” BBS RS. But after moving west to sunny California from Tennessee, Mike updated the look piecing together a custom air-ride setup and swapping over the wheels to the new Vintage line from HRE.

For the rest of the project, Mike left the car alone and we’re glad he did. It retains the class and beauty of its old school ‘70s look but also pushes the boundaries of what you can do with stance and fitment. You don’t have to like it, but if you can appreciate something like this, you get what the beauty behind stance is all about.
