Axe Falls On RX-8, Hope Springs For RX-7
Mazda has announced the rotary-powered RX-8 will be kicked to the curb after the 2011 model year. Sorely slumping sales, 428 units as of May 1st, and the fact that the Renesis engine does not meet EuroV emission standards sealed the sleek coupe's fate. Looking to the 'cup half-full' side of the situation, this does open the door for a rotary-powered sports car, be it called an RX-7 or not. Mazda is most-likely not going to abandon the rotary altogether so this may provide the automaker with a fresh start... count our fingers as crossed.
