Revolution is a name most of us know today, thanks largely in part to one seriously badass RX7. But there’s a lot more going on at Revolution than that one time attack car might suggest. Back in January we stopped by to say hello and see what was cooking at their shop in Saitama.
Although they have a small footprint compared to US facilities, there are almost no limits to what Revolution can produce. Their fabricating capabilities include an autoclave (for carbon fiber), lathes and CNC machines (metal works), welders and more. This allows Revolution to build virtually anything they can think of, from custom cages to full carbon bodies to redesigned suspension components.
Coming from a background in Super GT racing we were quick to realize how much real racecar engineering is transferred into their road and track machines. As we worked our way through the upstairs “off limits” maze I was continually blown away by what I was seeing. One room was designated for building engines and had at least 50 rotors and rotor housings, not to mention several backup 3-rotor ex Super GT complete engines.
Another room had boxes and boxes of brand new gears for the Super GT spec sequential dog-box transmissions. It became clear very quickly that Revolution is not your average tuning shop. Just when I thought I had seen it all, Aoki-san took me to their suspension room where he showed me the assembly process for their own damper line. Their clients are top secret and he wouldn’t even disclose them to me off the record, but they are said to include several Super GT teams.
But perhaps the most interesting thing I learned about Revolution that day was their involvement with Hankook. We all remember when the TA-2 was a carbon-bodied monster but it has since been re-wrapped in Hankook livery. I was told this was part of a partnership formed between the tire manufacturer and Revolution who joined the team as the development partner. Long story short if you’re driving/tracking your car on Hankook high performance tires you owe it to the guys at Revo. I could go on and on about this unique place but I’ll let the pictures to the rest of the talking.
