Heck English Racing can add 2 mpg to your highway totals and bump up the performance with a quick, down ’n dirty ECU flash. Rumors have the Evo getting an electric assist in the near future. In fact, Mitsubishi president Osamu Masuko has said the new hybrid Evo will hit the streets within the next three years.
The recipe (not sure if it’s for disaster) calls for the Evo’s front wheels will be powered by a tuned variant of the 63-horse electric motor from the all-electric i-MEV. Just like the proposed NSX it will be a front hybrid, rear gasoline split. The big question is what kind of engine, a version of the current turbocharged 2.0-liter 4B11 gasoline plant or could Mitsu go the clean diesel route? Indications lean toward the car retaining its high-tech all-wheel-drive system.
