1997 Honda Civic - Smackdown

The owners of this 600+hp Civic don’t have a problem with you talking smack.

It’s pretty damn easy to think this Honda Civic is just another show car. It’s super-slammed and rocks a pink engine bay. But don’t judge a book by its cover because it was built to win. It’s not a trailer queen that only gets dusted off for shows. It’s daily-driven and quite possibly one of the quickest whips commuting on the streets of Honolulu. And according to the owners JR and Shelly Ordonez, the project wouldn’t have even started without some encouragement from your typical haters.

“Years ago, I came across a picture of an EK that looked exactly like my car when it was still silver and just a K-swap. I took that picture and posted it on the local Hawaii Honda forum because I admired it. Then, someone who I always saw on cruises quoted the post, called me a poser and said I was just dreaming. That right there motivated me,” JR smiled.

The next day, JR ordered all the necessary parts for boost with an AFI turbo kit for his K20Z1 motor. After installing all the hardware in his garage, he brought the car down to Seth Stubenburge from Import Dynamics to get it tuned. The resulting numbers were nothing short of amazing—614hp and 406 lb-ft, and that’s with stock internals ladies and gentlemen.

“Right after the tune, I brought my car off the Dynojet and had my first race that night with the guy who called me out,” he told us. “I just so happened to see him on the road while testing out the car.” You can already guess the end result…

JR continued to tell us that he likes toying with any car that thinks they can stomp on his Civic, even motorcycles. Because the island of Oahu has no racetrack, he takes advantage and races on the few quiet strips of highway and industrial roads when he can. JR concluded, “Having haters is a good form of motivation. To the haters, keep drinking that hatorade!”
