When I was asked to choose five of my favorite features from the Super Street archives I thought it would be easy. Well I was wrong. There have been and continue to be so many dope Super Street tuner features that nailing down only a handful took some serious consideration. Nonetheless, I present to you in no particular order the features that made me wet my pants a.k.a. my all-time favorite features. Ever...
Feature excerpt: "When you sit and think of the ever-growing industry of Honda tuners there is Mugen and then there is everyone else. Why I love it: "It's the ultimate car from Honda paired with the ultimate Honda tuner. You got to love that Super GT inspired body."
Katsuhiro Ueo's Toyota Corolla GT-S
Feature excerpt: "When he's not unleashing his quart of blood technique on the D1 stage, Ueo runs his own tuning shop, Sift Racing Garage. The shop is also a used-car dealership, which explains Ueo's extensive car history. His list of past cars includes the R32 and R33GTR [Skyline], KP61 [Starlet], AE86 [of course], Z32 [300ZX], etc., for a total of about 50 cars."
"But Ueo's heart lies with Hachi...Roku, that is. An AE86 Trueno was his first drift car, and since then, he has learned much about the setup of this nimble and well-balanced car. But there is the question of power. The D1 judges have always given big points to the high-horsepower turbo cars with their lurid, smoky drifts."
Why I love it: "Back in 2002, Ueo and his Corolla were like David and Goliath hunting down high horsepower drift cars. Drifting an underpowered car isn't easy, but Ueo does it with style and precision. Go ahead look him up on YouTube."
Top Secret V12 Toyota Supra
Feature excerpt: "For the better part of the last decade Smoky has been churning out solid gold nuggets of tuning bling from within the confines of his Top Secret Performance Engineering Service shop. Exactly two years ago, Top Secret's CV35 Skyline debuted at the 2005 Tokyo Auto Salon."
"The only hybrid thing about the Top Secret Toyota is how Smoky successfully mated a V-12 to a Supra. Consider that this engine is the same length as the original 2JZ-GTE I-6 with an additional bank of six more cylinders set in a V formation. Now add two turbos with all of the necessary plumbing and you wonder how it all fits. But then, every Japanese person I meet wonders how my fat ass fits into a traditional JDM hotel room. Much like Smoky and this swap, somehow I just manage to squeeze it all in."
Why I love it: "For those that know me, I'm crazy in love with 90s Japanese cars and have always been a fan of Smokey Nagata's wild tuning style. While Top Secret may have a ton of crazy cars, the V-12 Supra and it's custom front end takes the gold."
Mines R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R
Feature excerpt: "In 1985, Michiro Niikura, a then-Bridgestone employee, did what any entrepreneur would do when he couldn't find the parts he wanted for the now-old school Celica (1600GT) and Skyline (C110)-he opened up his own tuning shop. Aptly named Mine's for Niikura's desire for a tuning style totally his, er, Mine's, he sought to redefine the conceptions of tuning."
"What does this all translate to? A max hp rating of 621 at 7,200 rpm with a torque reading of 434 lb-ft. Pop the hood, however, and none of this is evident. The only traces of a tweaked stock 280hp would require a CSI team to discern-the stock-looking carbon intake duct, radiator shroud, aluminum catch can and radiator are all aftermarket. Take out the overtly promiscuous yellow vacuum lines running to the catch can and the small Mine's logo on the intake manifold, and even a scrupulous smog ref wouldn't be any wiser."
Why I love it: "The Skyline GT-R is one of the most desired Japanese cars of all time. I chose Mine's R34 for its sleeper appearance. Unfortunately, under full throttle not even the Silence-VX Pro Titan exhaust will hide the beast 600 horsepower engine that lays beneath the bonnet."
HKS CT230R 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
Feature excerpt: "Once CT230R was finished, HKS took it back to the track and sent Taniguchi off to break various records across Japan at some of the most famous racetracks, including Fuji, Suzuka, Tokachi, Okayama, Central, Sportsland Sugo, Auto Polis, and, of course, back to the place where the action really counts: Tsukuba."
"In the winter of '06, Taniguchi beat the 54-second record he set two years prior with a 53.999, another high point of his career as he becomes the first to break into the 53-second barrier, and a month later, he beats that time with a 53.589, the current Tsukuba track record."
Why I love it: "Pair one of the best tuning platforms and one of the best tuner's out there and you end up with the CT230R. Supposedly anything under a minute at the Tsukuba track is considered fast. This track monster does it in 53 seconds. Enough said."
