If there's one thing you can count on with the original Top Gear series, it's some of the best roadside visuals of any automotive program on the planet. Even with the lower definition broadcast of Episode 1, from Series 7, aired way back in 2005, the dramatic backdrop is like the fourth member (or fifth, if you're counting The Stig) of the Top Gear band of misfits.
In this episode, the trio head back to Isle of Man—an island situated in the Irish sea with unique, rather narrow roads surrounded by lush green sheets of land and oceanic overhangs—the type of dramatic scenery you'd expect to find in big screen love story. You've heard of the region due to the internationally known Isle of Man TT, a time trial that's been in existence since the early 1900s and continues to stand as a proving grounds for some of the most seasoned riders in existence. It is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous motorsport events to participate in.
In this episode the TG crew gets behind the wheel of an Aston DB9, BMW M6, and a 911 Carrera S to put them through their paces and compare times like the competitive bunch they are. Adding to the twisty, confidence-testing roads are heavy winds and some wet concrete to make things even more interesting. And then, the Stig is "shipped" to the island to do what the Stig does.
Comparing factory cars to one another isn't always the most exciting thing to watch, but when they're pumped up performance-minded models and set loose on a landscape like Isle of Man, it's must-watch T.V.
