You've invested hundreds upon thousands of dollars into modi- fying your car over the years. The money was well worth being spent and your car has become the talk of the town and at car shows across the states. With all the media hype and recogni-tion your car has prestigiously received, it was only a matter of time before your worst nightmare became a shocking reality. One early morning you walk toward the parking lot and your heart quickly sinks to the pit of your stomach. Your once treasured possession you worked so hard on is nowhere in sight. You, along with thousands of fellow vehicle owners, are among a growing statistical group of victims who have had their vehicles stolen within the past year. Shards of glass litter the asphalt where your car once sat as you sit there helplessly pondering how you could've prevented this tragedy.

High-end alarms with state-of-the-art paging systems, kill switches, and steering wheel locks are all considered clever devices to deter car theft but to a true car thief, they serve as ornamental accessories that can be easily bypassed within a split second. So what's a person who's looking for that next level of car security to do?

Haas GPS recently released a new Text-N-Track H1000 GPS Tracker for enhanced vehicle security and monitoring. The unit enables owners to locate and track their vehicle in real-time using their cell phone and computer. The tracker sends a text message to your personal phone alerting the vehicle owner if the vehicle is stolen or towed. If you're the possessive type who enjoys putting your significant other on a short leash, the Haas GPS can be programmed to set maximum speed limits, geographic boundaries, and curfew times and text message the owner with immediate notification if any conditions have been violated. Factory or aftermarket alarms can be integrated with the system as an additional security by triggering a notification if a thief or unwanted individual tampers with your vehicle. Many times a thief will trigger an alarm multiple times to see if the owner comes out to inspect the problem. With a standard alarm, most owners will be too far away to hear the vehicle's alarm. Other times with alarms using a paging device, the vehicle owner will oftentimes be farther than the provided one- to two-mile radius or in an area that doesn't receive a clear signal. The Haas H1000's design is based upon a link between a GPS and your cell phone, which offers additional coverage area.

Thieves beware; a backup battery independently operates the tracking system if the main power is disconnected for up to two hours. The GPS tracker also detects motion if the alarm wire is cut and the car is rolled down the street or up a tow truck. The Haas H1000 enables the stolen car victim to quickly log onto the computer by accessing www.haasautovantagegps.com and typing in their password to track the location of the vehicle whether it is on the 405 freeway traveling at 70 mph (speed tracking) or in the early stages of being stripped in a residential area. The unit monitors your car's precise location by continuously pinging your vehicle every 10 minutes with a location accuracy rate of approximately 100 meters as owners can track where the car is currently located and at what speed. Testing the unit, we used Google Earth Maps and found our newly installed Haas GPS to be only one house away from where the car sat in our garage. Imagine yourself tracking your vehicle after its been stolen and calling the police with the exact location. The surprise on the thieves' faces when the cops pull up to their doorstep would be gratifying to any owner. Competitive units like LoJack require the owner to call in to report the vehicle stolen at which point LoJack activates the unit. From that point on it's up to the cop's discretion to hunt down the vehicle. Also, LoJack units don't give an exact pinpoint area; rather, it emits a series of beeps and blips that inform cops that they're approaching a radius perimeter. The cops will then have to go from door to door in order to locate the car. Now we both know our beloved law enforcement is out there fighting crimes while sucking down jelly donuts but do you honestly believe they'll take the time to scour large areas in search of your car? We didn't think so.

Along with the added security the Haas GPS has to offer, the H1000 can also keep track of vehicle maintenance schedules like your next oil change and will send a text message to the owner if for some reason the vehicle's battery voltage drops bellow the recommended level. In addition to its standard features, several optional features can be included such as remote door lock/unlock from your cell phone, a Car-Find feature that can locate your vehicle in a parking lot by flashing the lights and honking the horn, and Starter Interrupt, which prevents unauthorized use of the vehicle.

Haas GPS President Jeff Haas says the H1000 comes with 90 days of unlimited two-way communication. Continued operation is on an annual subscription basis for $15 per month with no hidden fees or additional costs. Haas is confident in the product that they back it up with an optional five-year $5,000 Performance warranty available for $100, and is payable in the event the vehicle is stolen and not recovered within 30 days. With a suggested retail price of $695, the Haas H1000 is a smart investment for those looking to safeguard their car.
