It's hot and I'm sitting shaded by trees at a Cal State Fullerton coffee shop waiting for this month's model, Alie Layus, to show up. I have a few minutes to spare so I stare at what college girls look like these days. Not too shabby, but I realize that there are only a few things better than doing an interview with, quite possibly, the most beautiful girl on campus. But this face-to-face sit-down is a guarantee that I won't get ticketed for anything.
Alie strolled up, hiding behind these big Gucci-style sunglasses, but I saw that she stood up to the beauty that the camera captured just the other day. She's got a certain style that grabs your attention right from the get-go. We small-talked for a minute, but since she and I stole spots in 30-minute parking, we cut the foreplay short and went right to it. We wrapped up 45 minutes later-I didn't even mind the $15 ticket. Shoot, I got her phone number, my foot in the door, and future opportunities to kick it. If anything, I got away cheap. Hate me, you fools.
2nr: What made you get into modeling?
Alie: I never thought I'd get into the import scene. I want to do more mainstream commercial stuff.
2nr: But in the meantime, how long have you been doing shows?
AL: It's been about a couple years now.
2nr: What will you be doing after you get tired of shows-what's the 5-year plan?
AL: My life is fuckin bananas right now! If you asked me that question five years ago I know I wouldn't be telling you that I'd be modeling. What I can tell you is that in five years I'll be happy and be making lots of money-and hopefully I'll have someone that'll be taking care of me!
2nr: Whoa! I'm not saying that you're a gold digger...
AL: Not THAT way.
2nr: Just a guess, but it may seem that you changed your notion against dating "nice guys". I don't know ... are you still looking for a guy to beat up your emotions?
AL: Yes, I've changed. I'm done dating assholes.
2nr: Are you sure? I mean, we're never assholes in the beginning.
AL: Yes! And it seems that I've been meeting a lot of nice guys lately, but then again I always tend to meet weird guys! My friends are always wondering why I can't meet anyone normal. The last guy I tried to date...I found out that he went to cosmetology school.
2nr: Wait, you couldn't tell he went to cosmetology school? I mean the guys working the makeup counter at the mall aren't exactly subtle.
AL: He was...like...gay...but he wasn't gay. He freaked me out one time because he asked to borrow my mascara because he had to put on his goatee. The last guy I dated cheated on me.
2nr: Well, don't you go on feeling that you're striking out. But just to let you know-that's two swings.
AL: That's why I want the nice guy now. I want a nerd!
2nr: The nerd you say? Did I tell you I like computers and electronic gadgets?
AL: Nerds won't leave you. They won't cheat on you. I want somebody who will be my best friend. I'm really into music so he has to like music too-I like underground hip hop, like Living Legends and Atmosphere; rock and classic rock-especially The Beatles.
2nr: What would this dream guy be like?
AL: He has dark hair and eyes. He has to be funny because I honestly believe that I'm the funniest person in the world so he has to be able to make me laugh. He also has to be able to get my sense of humor.
The guy I'm thinking of has the style of James Dean and Johnny Depp, but
2nr: Good luck with the humorous corn rowed nerd that likes hip hop and rock that doesn't mind carrying your purse while petting your hair like it was a soft, furry hamster. Some girls have those already they're called "wuss-boys"; some call them "stalkers".
2nr: What's the first thing you think of when you roll out of bed in the morning?
AL: Going to Starbucks. But yesterday I didn't get up 'till 2:30 and today I got up at 10:45. That's really early for me. I was going to go workout, but I never made it.
2nr: I've seen your body. You might not need too much work. Do you workout often?
AL: In the past 2 months, I haven't worked out at all. I'm thin but I'm out of shape.
2nr: You look in shape to me.
2nr: What's the most difficult thing for you to do right now?
AL: Keeping motivated. I'm really trying to do commercial stuff and break into the mainstream. It would be easier to get noticed and make a name for yourself if there weren't so many other pretty girls-but the fact is that there are so many beautiful girls out there. Going on auditions and getting turned down so many times really takes a toll.
2nr: When you walked up I really noticed you. Do you think you have a "style"?
AL: Well, when I'm out kicking it I'm really basic-jeans, nice top. By the way, there's only one brand of jeans that I wear, Frankie B's because they fit me perfect! When I go to clubs I like my clothes small. I'll usually wear a hand-torn skirt.
2nr: Do you tear them yourself or have someone tear them for you?
AL: I do it myself.
2nr: Hmmm. Erotically violent with a touch of sexy.
AL: And I like wearing really high shoes because I'm short.
2nr: Is everything about you "real"?
2nr: (I pause, break eye contact for a split second) I agree.
2nr: What's the dream job.
AL: I don't know. There's a billion things I want to do. I want to own my own clothing company just like everybody else. I'd love to have a clothing company that makes the exact kind of stuff that I wear-like the torn skirts. OH! I'd also love to own my own nightclub. I love that it's always changing and it's always different. It's not that type of job where you go and sit in an office for 9 to 5 every day. I can't do that.
2nr: Everyone that's in San Diego is always confused when a person decides to leave the city, why did you leave?
AL: I just wanted to get away from everything, plus I get bored easily. It was either here (Orange County) or San Francisco. I love the scene in the Bay,
2nr: If I gave you a thousand bucks right now what would you shop for?
AL: I love purses and shoes. I'd grab a cute Chanel purse and...
2nr: A pair of Michael Kors? Miu Miu's? BCBGs?
AL: No I'd buy Dior glasses, Dior shoes, and a Dior or Chanel purse and some Frankie Bs. I feel guilty with perfume because I bought Lancome Miracle and I don't use it as often as I should.
2nr: What's the nicest thing that anyone ever given you?
AL: No one buys me stuff. I don't think I've gotten anything extravagant. OH! My dad bought me a Teacup Maltese. It's a white puffy dog...so cute!
2nr: People must give you compliments all the time.
AL: Yeah. But that gets old. I was raised in a family that really downplayed physical beauty and focused on teaching me to build my character and having a good personality. It's flattering that people say that I'm really pretty but I'd rather have someone tell me that I'm really funny.
Now, if you were going to give me a million dollars I'd spend it all on my parents and give them the life that they've always wanted. My whole thing about making money is based on that goal of mine.
2nr: You are soooo funny!
2nr: You'll never get a million from me.
2nr: What's gives you motivation?
AL: My brother Dan. He's the lead singer in a rock band called Augustana that got signed a year ago. Their sound is like a Coldplay or Counting Crows. They're on the radio and MTV now and whenever I see or hear them, I feel motivated to do my stuff.
2nr: Seems like it'd be a great thing to tell your brother to put you in a video.
AL: I know! I told him that he better put me in a video.2nr: If I were in a rock band, I'd put you in a video.
2nr: Let's blast through some favorites. Let's start with food.
AL: I love Filipino food-but just the normal stuff like rice and Adobo. Also, there's this place down the street from me called Pepe's. They make the hugest burritos...huge everything.
2nr: You like huge burritos. Noted. Favorite car?
AL: I like the M3. For import cars, I like the STi, but right now, I'm into SUVs like Range Rovers and Hummers.
2nr: I like Hummers too. Favorite music?
AL: It depends on my mood but my favorite CD right now is my brother's album.
2nr: Favorite thing to do when you have free time?
AL: I love snowboarding. I've been boarding for eight seasons now. I love it so much that I'll take a day and go to Big Bear or Mountain High by myself.
2nr: Do you do anything crazy?
AL: What to you mean?
2nr: You know what I mean.
AL: Nothing crazy.
2nr: It's been a while since we've selected someone from the scene. How'd we find you?
AL: Well my profile is on Myspace and one of the editors found me.
2nr: It was probably Scott. He's always scouring Myspace.
AL: Yeah. I found out that he was an editor and I asked when I could be on the cover of 2nr. He kinda laughed and didn't take me too seriously. So I started to bug him and emailed him everyday, "So when can we talk about me and the cover of the magazine?". Finally he called me up and told me that there was a non-cover shoot and if I'd be available. Everyone told me that if I do a feature that I'd never get the cover but I was like "I'm gonna get the cover!" I guess that you guys liked the feature enough to call me for the cover!
