I’m all for making routine automotive jobs easy so I can spend more time enjoying myself behind the wheel. Depending on your location, weather and environmental conditions may require you to wash your pride and joy more than once a week. That’s a heck of a lot of washing, especially if you have more than one beast in your stable. But remember that drying is a step easily overlooked if you want your car looking its absolute best in the years to come; this step is just as important as the washing itself.
Water always contains some trace amounts of minerals like calcium, iron or salt, or even nastier airborne contaminants (acidic sulfurous and nitrous oxides—i.e., pollution). Once natural moisture evaporation begins, these contaminants are left behind and will be left on your car’s clearcoat. The longer you leave them, the more they will bond and/or eat away at the clearcoat. Eventually, it will become permanently etched—not nice at all.
A soft towel, chamois or microfiber cloth will take away the bulk of the residual rinse water from your wash, but you still risk leaving scratches on the clearcoat due to the rubbing action. Also, you will never get the car’s surface perfectly dry, and the rinse water will still hide in various nooks and crannies. Simply driving it into the garage will cause the rinse water hiding in your side mirror to drip down your nicely dried door.
I discovered a new tool that you can use to effortlessly dry an entire car in minutes without leaving micro-scratches or water spots.
