When swapping your car with a non-factory engine a problem with accessories can arise. Is there enough space to the frame rails? How about the cross member? Luckily, when it comes to LS swaps, like our LS3 Nissan 350Z, Chevrolet Performance has a gaggle of accessory drive configurations to fit the most obstinate engine bays. With a street price of $600 to $950 depending on the kit, you get an affordable system that's needed to finish off your long-block.
While the water pump isn't included, the kits include brackets, bolts, belts, tensioners, alternator and a power steering pump with reservoir. Kits also come with an option for an air conditioning compressor and bracket. Our Project LS350Z features an East Coast Supercharging C6 Corvette supercharger bracket and tensioner system, which utilizes the tensioner on the air conditioning bracket to mount their primary tensioner. Air conditioning can be added later with supplemental kits that include the appropriate hardware and compressor.
There's two different naturally aspirated front drive systems offered by Chevrolet Performance, the PN 19257325 Corvette accessory drive system (PN 19155067 with air conditioning); and the CTS-V accessory drive system PN 19155066 (PN 19299070 with air conditioning) like we chose for our Z33. Both kits position the alternator and power steering on the driver's side of the engine, with the tensioner and AC compressor on the passenger side. Both use LS3-style pulley offsets.
The biggest difference is the CTS-V system sits lower and more compact on the front of the engine, which is what we need. The alternator placement on the Corvette kit sits 3.75 inches further over to the driver's side when referenced from the crank's centerline. This makes the CTS-V system better for tight engine bays, while the Corvette drive suits vehicle's that might place the LS lower in the frame, causing interference issues with low-slung accessories.
Both the CTS-V and Corvette kits use the same PN 12620556 LS3 damper along with a PN 89018052 water pump. Since our LS3 was built with a keyed LSA forged crankshaft, we went with ATI's SFI-certified C6 Corvette damper.
WHICH LS PLATFORM ENGINES WILL THESE NOT WORK ON?
Easily put, both accessory drives will work on any aluminum LS based engine (LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6, LSA) except for the LS7 and LS9 engines due to their longer crank snout. The CTS-V system will not work on iron blocks outside of the LSX block. This means engines like the LQ4 can only use the Corvette system due to a missing boss on the iron blocks that normally hold the alternator bracket. Also worth noting is the LSA crankshaft does come with a keyway and should be used with a keyed damper, which is always recommended for supercharged engines.
The PN 19257325 Corvette accessory drive system (PN 19155067 with air conditioning) moves all the accessories higher from the centerline of the crankshaft. The alternator sits 3.75-inches further over to the driver's side, though due to the remote mounted power steering reservoir location, the overall height of this drive is 1.5-inches shorter than the CTS-V drive.
The new tensioner for the supercharger uses the air conditioning bracket's tensioner as a mounting point. The air compressor does not clear the 350Z's sub-frame but probably would if we removed the back, lower mounting collar on the compressor. We aren't running air conditioning so it wasn't worth the time to find out.
The power steering bracket mounts next to our PN 89018052 water pump. The power steering reservoir mounts with two bolts to the top of the bracket and uses an included hose with clamps to gravity feed the fluid to the pump.
The mounting bolts for the power steering pump are accessed through the holes in the power steering pulley.
The alternator bracket also contains an idler pulley.
Normally the belt tensioner mounts off the side of the front of the cylinder head but this is where our East Coast Supercharging C6 supercharger bracket will mount to. A new tensioner that mounts above the air conditioning bracket's tensioner comes with the ECS kit.
ATI is very well known for their line of SFI certified racing dampers. We are using their PN 917246 damper, which is essentially a keyed LSA variant without the front supercharger drive pulley.
Here's the completed CTS-V accessory drive installed minus the ECS supercharger tensioner. Their kit utilizes a Paxton NOVI-1500 supercharger to support about 800 horsepower. Our goals are 700 rwhp on 9-10 psi of boost while on E85 fuel. Next up we will discuss the fuel system needed to make that power!
