Bolt-On Boost is back in 2001. The first time around in the August 2000 issue we featured 18 kits and had dyno tests on 11. While that's a .611 batting average, we plan to bat a thousand in 2001. In the following pages we will feature 8 all-new kits, 5 kits that didn't have dyno graphs last time, 5 kits we covered in the Dyno Cell or in a story and 6 kits that are pure retreads. The re-run kits were selected to give the guide a better mix of cars, manufacturers and a better mix of blowers versus turbos. All 24 kits were dyno tested and we have included graphs on all but two in the text. Let the turbo kits spool.

XS Engineering Celica GT-S
Turbo magazine unveiled this kit on the December 2000 issue cover car. Since then the prototype has graduated to production status. The hurdle facing the crew at XS was the Celica's single-line fuel system. This has been addressed and fuel enrichment is handled by the ECU, a rising-rate fuel pressure regulator and upgraded fuel pump. To extract upgraded power, an APEXi Super AFC is brought to bear on the 2ZZ. For our testing here we have evaluated a kit outfitted with the top-of-the-line fuel system. All versions of the XS kit include a front-mount air-to-air chiller, which is welcomed addition considering the 2ZZ's 11.5:1 compression ratio.

The kit delivers torque down low and horsepower up high and we were impressed with the car when we drove it for the December 2000 story. The sculpted Celica is an eye-catcher and XS makes it a real retina scorcher with its ball-bearing turbo conversion package.

Vortech Engineering Acura Integra GSR
Vortech's GSR test mule made the Trek 2 Texas and the trip back (3,400 miles) without incident. The crew on the trip said that the kit has been beaten on extensively to ensure durability. The high revving GSR powerplant and Vortech's centrifugal design are a good match as the blower makes more power the faster it spins. So Integra GSR pilots have yet another performance option.

Area 51 IS 300
The IS 300 has slowly spawned a number of go-fast parts. This supercharger kit is the first blower to be unleashed on the IS. The kit utilizes a Vortech centrifugal compressor and can be boosted from its standard 5.5 psi to Stage 2 specs with a custom pulley and optional aftercooler. There are a number of tuned IS 300s prowling the streets and with the recent introduction of the five-speed manual version, we expect the numbers to grow significantly. The IS 300 wagon looks to also be a customization candidate.

Hahn Racecraft Neon
The 1996-'99 Dodge/Plymouth Neon is one of those regionally popular cars. There are many Neon clubs on the Web and owners of these domestic import fighters are big-time batten-down-the-hatches enthusiasts. Hahn Racecraft (HRC) has answered the prayers of Neon speed freaks with its bolt-on turbo kit for 1995-1999 Neons.

Mitsubishi TDO5H or TDO6H turbos are the basis of the kits. Fuel enrichment depends on the OBD status of the Neon in question. OBD-I cars use an ACCEL in-line pump and a HRC Fuel Control Unit. Cars with OBD-II include a HRC Fuel Mapper. The Stage III system incorporates upgraded injectors and additional electronic controls.

This kit is complete and includes the follow extras; 30-psi boost gauge, pillar pod mount, blow-off valve, Cerametallic coated downpipe and a fuel pressure gauge. Not only does this kit put two and a quarter to the ground, it makes 223 lbs-ft of torque. That will get it done on the street.

Alamo Autosports Ford Focus
Turbo pressurization has become a realization for Ford Focus pilots, thanks to Alamo Autosports. Part of Alamo's FocusParts line of products for the Blue Oval's import challenger, this turbo kit employs a Garrett T3 turbo with Alamo-spec compressor and turbine wheels. On the fuel side there are two paths to choose from. The base kit relies on a Haltech AIC, which commands a single 550cc secondary injector, along with upgrades to the stock ECU. For those that want extra credit (read more power), a Haltech E6K stand-alone engine management system can be used. The Focus has a single-line fuel system similar to the set up on the Celica. During torture testing, which consisted of extended WOT operation at 9 psi, Alamo found that the rods were a potential weak link as all four broke at once. Alamo used this mishap to develop its line of FocusParts rods and pistons. With the internals we can see serious power mongers pumping up the boost well past the 7 psi of the base kit. Go forth and tune.

Hahn Racecraft 1995-'99 Eclipse GS/RS
The all-natural Eclipse's 420A four seems to take well to pressurization and Hahn Racecraft has done the most drag racing with boosted 420A power. The race version of this kit has blasted into the 10s. The street kit is a 6 psi non-intercooled affair that features a tried-and-proven TD05H-16G turbo, a cast stainless steel exhaust manifold, 2.25-inch downpipe, gloss black-finished piping, an OE blow-off valve from a 3000 GT as well as an upgraded fuel pump and adjustable fuel pressure regulator for enrichment. The Hahn turbo system is available in three stages. In Stage II trim a bar-and-plate air-to-air front mount intercooler is added. The Stage II set-up can run 8 to 10 psi and both Stage I and Stage II are true bolt-ons, requiring no internal engine mods. The Stage III system is more performance oriented, requiring rods and forged pistons. Stage III can be configured with an optional 20-G turbo.

Kit includes extras like a blow-off valve, boost gauge, pillar pod and fuel pressure gauge. No the RS/GS can boost up just like its big brothers the GS-T and GSX. Now all Hahn has to do is develop an aftermarket all-wheel drive system.

XS Engineering 240SX Turbo Kit
If you own a second- or third-generation 240SX, you should have already noticed the engine produces good torque but lacks the high-end pull of some of its counterparts. The KA24DE's torque band is due to its large cylinder bore and long connecting rod configuration. Unfortunately, the drawback of the engine configuration is a poor top-end power. To remedy the lack of top-end performance of the KA24DE, XS Engineering developed a bolt-on turbo kit for the 240SX. A cast four-into-one Rev Hard exhaust manifold is responsible for feeding the custom T04 turbocharger a steady diet of hot exhaust gases. The turbo is regulated to conservative 6.5 psi of boost pressure by a Turbonetics wastegate. A front mount air-to-air intercooler is included in the kit, increasing performance and reliability by chilling the charge air before consumption. A Vortech boost-dependent regulator and a high-output Nippon Denso in-tank pump handle fuel enrichment. Currently, the 1995-up 240SX kit does not include a CARB-EO number. For really performance hungry enthusiasts a larger turbocharger option is also available.

Jim Wolf Technology 1991 - 1999 SR20s
The beauty of the Jim Wolf Technology turbo kit is three-fold. First is the impressive boost in performance, thanks to a stout flat torque curve and responsive turbo. Second is the fact that the Jim Wolf kit encompasses all SR20DE-powered vehicles from 1991-'94 Sentra SE-Rs to 1995 and up 200SX SE-Rs, to NX2000s, Infiniti G20s and newer Sentra SEs. Third is the kit sports CARB certification.

The kit delivers a 50-percent gain in power production, which we gladly salute, and checks in at an ultra reasonable price of $3595. The kit consists of a cast iron exhaust manifold, T3/T28 series turbo and all the piping and hardware needed to hook it up. Fuel enrichment comes via a JWT-tuned factory ECU and the OE injectors. With only 6.5 psi of boost, the kit requires no blow-off valve which keeps things all the more simple under the hood. Plans call for offering an air-to-air intercooler as an option in the near future and the JWT inventory contains plenty of race parts (low-compression pistons, rods etc.) that make the kit an excellent foundation for a full-race set-up. As it sits the JWT kit, as tested on an Infiniti G20t, delivers a max gain of 61.3 hp at 6900 rpm and a 59.7 lb-ft increase of max torque at 3500 rpm. As far as peak figures are concerned the SR20 put down 118 hp in all natural trim and 177 ponies in boosted guise. Torque jumped from a peak of 115 lbs-ft to a whopping 171 lbs-ft. That will set you back in your seat.

There seems to be a whole lot of pressurization possibilities for the Miata. The availability of numerous turbo kits and a supercharger package should dispel the Miata's reputation as a "girl's car." The drop-top's low price for used examples should only fuel the fire. Civics of this vintage can be found on-line between $4,000 and $10,000 and we are sure many can be had for less in traditional newspaper classifieds. These are OBD-I controlled powertrains, which are easier to deal with and tune. And you can get a hatchback.

The D16Z engine is a gem. It's factory rated at 125 hp at 6,600 rpm and 106 lbs-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm. The powerplant is a VTEC, single overhead cam design that has proven its mettle on the street and at the strip.

A'PEXi USA developed its kit around an IHI AX53B60-P18 ball-bearing turbo because it provided the best combination of spool-up and top-end flow. The insurgence of ball bearing center sections has dramatically increased the versatility of modern turbos. With the reduction of friction provided by the ball bearing center sections, turbos can run bigger housings/wheels and produce more flow at higher engine speeds with out sacrificing as much responsiveness on the bottom end. The A'PEXi kit includes a cast-iron manifold that has superior durability than tubular manifolds. Fuel enrichment is handled by a high-capacity pump and adjustable regulator. A Power Intake filter kit, the appropriate plumbing and all necessary mounting hardware round out the kit. On the optional side, A'PEXi offers a GT intercooler and fuel system upgrades. For our testing purposes we will evaluate the stock non-intercooled kit and the upgraded front-mount intercooled kit.

Neuspeed 2.0-liter VW
The Neuspeed Eaton supercharger kit generates 5 psi when pressurizing Volswagens 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.The foundation of the kit is an Eaton 45 cubic-inch, twin-rotor blower. Neuspeed has separated itself from most other Eaton-based kits by incorporating the supercharger into the intake manifold in much the same manner as TRD has done with a number of its kits. This incorporation makes for an OE-look installation and the chore of putting on the blower is much easier. The Neuspeed Supercharger features a heavy-wall casting for sound deadening and wrap-around fins for strength and cooling.

The savvy VW enthusiasts gets more than hard parts as the Neuspeed package includes a custom Neuspeed P-Chip which tunes the fuel and ignition curves for boosted performance. The blower is outfitted with a built-in bypass valve that relieves boost pressure at idle and light-throttle cruise to maintain optimum fuel efficiency. The Neuspeed supercharger comes with a 36-month limited warranty and is 50-state legal affair via CARB E.O. 238-9.

Star Performance Eclipse GS/RS
Star Performance is one of a few companies that has stepped up and developed a turbo conversion kit for the Eclipse GS/RS. The flexes a T04B/T3 hybrid turbo, cast iron manifold, external wastegate, air filter, HKS bypass valve and chromed piping. Fuel enrichment is handled by a boost-dependent fuel pressure regulator and a 255-lph in-tank fuel pump. The kit comes in stage two configuration which adds a front-mount intercooler to the mix. Other upgrades include a T04E turbo and either a GReddy Type-S or HKS Super Sequential blow-off valve.

The naturally aspirated A420 powerplant has proven to be a willing participant when it comes to boost. The key is to run premium fuel and not boost past the manufacturer's recommended pressure.

GReddy's 1999-'00 Civic Si Turbo Kit
The GReddy bolt-on turbo kit for the 1999-'00 Civic Si shares identical components to the Acura GSR kit with the exception of the intercooler piping and the FCU unit. Like the GSR kit, the Civic Si turbo kit comes with four brand new 310cc injectors and FCU unit for fuel enrichment. An internally regulated Mitsubishi TD05H-18G turbocharger is set at a conservative 8 psi. The kit comes with all the necessary hardware and a detailed installation manual making a easy bolt-on affair. As an option two different air-to-air front-mount intercoolers are available. Vortech Civic Si
Vortech Engineering"s V-5 series blower has been on the market or some time but the Si is the first Honda Vortech has developed a full bolt-on kit for. The V-5 is compact in design and aimed at the cramped engine bays of imports. The D-Trim unit used in this kit moves 650 cfm of air and can support up to 435 horsepower. A heavy-duty version pushes 750 cfm of air-good enough for up to 525. Boost for the standard kit is 8 psi but the V5 can be spun to 15 psi (20 psi for heavy-duty units) while retaining abiatic efficiency (be sure you have fuel).

The Si kit utilizes a tube drive set-up to run the blower. The kit includes an air cleaner inlet, bypass valve, in-line fuel pump, FMU boost referenced regulator and a Vortech Aftercooler. The Aftercooler consists of a reservoir, pump, lines and heat exchange unit and its operates like an air-to-water interccoler cooling the charge air prior to the combustion chamber. The charge air is funneled through 2.75-inch piping that is available in satin or polished finish.

Our test car had a Comptech header system and APEXi exhaust installed along with the blower. The car was representative of what would normally prowl the streets. We were impressed with its steep power curve. In fact the only thing stopping the power production party was the rev limiter which kicked in at 7,900 rpm.

Jackson Racing Ford Focus
Like Jackson Racing's Honda kits, the Eaton twin-rotor supercharger is the weapon of choice. The twin-rotor design of the Eaton is also known as a Roots-style blower and a positive-displacement blower. The former is the name of its creator the latter refers to how the unit compresses a given amount of air per revolution.

The base Jackson Racing kit pumps out 6 psi but a high-output kit that delivers 8 to 10 psi should be on the streets by the time you read this. The circumference of the pulley used on the system determines the boost level. So a higher boost pulley would be smaller to spin quicker and make more boost. The 6-psi kit uses the stock fuel system and Jackson Racing has developed the infrastructure needed to properly fuel the big boost set-up.

GReddy's 1996-'99 Acura GSR Turbo Kit
GReddy Performance of Irvine, Calif., developed its first turbo conversion kit for the 1989-'93 1.6-liter Miata engines and was a massive hit. The 1992-'95 Honda Civic EX kits would soon follow. GReddy has emerged as a leader in producing street legal bolt-on boost.

At the heart of the Integra GSR kit is a Mitsubishi TD05H 18G turbocharger with an 8cm2-exhaust housing. An internal wastegate regulates the turbocharger to a rather conservative .55 bar (7.8 psi) of boost pressure. Unlike some of the other turbo kits, the GReddy kit comes with (4) 310cc low-impedance injectors and a Fuel Control Unit (FCU) for fuel enrichment. The FCU trims down the pulsewidth of the injectors at idle and light throttle driving. Then, under boost, the FCU increases injector pulsewidth to meet the fuel demands created by positive manifold pressure. This approach increases fuel economy and enhances driveability while keeping the engine at a safe air/fuel ratio under boost for extended reliability.

There are two different sizes of intercoolers available as an optional upgrade. Both units are air-to-air, one measuring 7.7x23.6x3 and the other measuring 11x23.6x3. The smaller of the two units does not require any modifications to the bumper support but the larger unit does.

Jackson Racing Civic Si
Jackson Racing has become synonymous with pressurized Hondas and, more recently, moved on to attack the compact car gam. Jackson's weapon of choice is the Eaton twin-rotor blower.

For the Si kit, Jackson Racing centered its efforts on commanding the VTEC effect. One of the problems with VTEC controllers is they only control the switching of cam lobes and do not address fuel enrichment. When a Honda engine goes into VTEC under WOT the ECU moves to a special MAP with enhanced fueling. VTEC controllers fool the cams but not the ECU, so the resulting lack of fuel limits power potential. This condition is more critical in boosted applications where more stress is put on fuel and ignition performance. Jackson Racing has developed a black box that delivers the best of both world's-the VTEC effect at 2500 rpm and proper engine control throughout the rev range. So the blower provides optimum power down low and premium power at the high end. The kit is a 50-state legal affair.

Toyota Racing Development's Solara
The TRD Solara supercharger kit features a unique one-piece intake manifold with an Eaton-based compressor built into the manifold. A bypass valve regulates the Eaton blower to a very conservative 4psi of positive manifold pressure. We were utterly surprised to hear that the factory ECU handles fuel enrichment. Unlike the 4Runner kit, which includes a boost dependent regulator, the Solara engine management system is capable of sensing the extra air being fed to the V6 engine. The factory ECU compensates for the extra air and adds the necessary fuel requirements to maintain a proper air/fuel ratio. All necessary hardware, including all pulleys and belts, are included in the kit for easy bolt-on installation. The supercharger even comes preassembled for a quicker installation. Any qualified mechanic can install the kit within one day but we do recommend that if your vehicle is still under warranty to have it installed by the Toyota dealer.

We hope to see more supercharger kits to be developed for vehicles sharing the V6 engine of the Solara (i.e. IS300, Camry, Sienna and Avalon). The next time you see a Solara on the streets and it is sporting a "TRD-powered" sticker, think twice before you slam the pedal. This could be a race you might not win.

Stillen Maxima
Stillen has built up a reputation as one of the premier manufacturers for Nissan's go fast parts. So when it came time for Nissan to power up a Maxima for duty as a CART pace car Stillen handled the build up. This project acted as the groundwork for the company's blower kit and a host of other Maxima components. Pressurization is provided by a Vortech V1-S supercharger operating in conjunction with a Stillen exhaust system with custom intermediate pipes and a few other tricks. Stillen's mods and six psi of boost increased output to 281 hp as measured at the wheels which is quite a jump from the 187.7 hp baseline run (222-hp at the flywheel). The Maxima, in five-speed SE-trim guise, is a real sleeper- powerful, roomy and only $24-$25k it is one of those cars that will sell itself after one test drive. Rumor has a 260-hp model hitting the scene in 2001 (as a 2002 model) which may make more people take notice of this fast four-door.
