I know my friends at Meguiars will kill me when I say that I've never really detailed my Scion FR-S. Quite frankly, I was fine with just the basic car wash. Since the car is always parked outside, my mentality was that it was never going stay clean, it's going to be exposed to Los Angeles pollution and some idiot is eventually going to leave a door ding on my car anyway. The inevitable happened, and notorious oxidation appeared on my carbon fiber hood. Before I even started to care about polishing and waxing it was too late, the oxidation spread like cancer and my hood was ruined. I could've sanded it down and shot it with clear, but who knows when the oxidation would return. Instead, I wanted to go for a cleaner look with a color paint match. I peeked into the office of Yamz (by office, I mean cubicle) to see if he had the hook up on paint. This guy is OG Super Street and besides being a grumpy old man, he's skilled when it comes to wrenching. Last time I checked he was the one that coined the word "celebri-tuners." I mean we're just doing it for the gram. But I digress. With Yamz's help I was connected with Microfinish for some AutomotiveTouchup paint. The colors are custom-formulated from the most comprehensive library of OEM colors to create an exact match for my Scion Hot Lava.
Since my painting skills are as good as a juvenile graffiti artist, I enlisted the help of Macias Auto Body in Santa Ana, CA. These are the same guys that did the paint job on Dominic Le's rad Hakotora truck that we featured in volume 20, issue 3. AutomotiveTouchup included everything needed to get the job done such as paint prep surface wipes, primer, basecoat color, and clear coat. On the first day the guys sanded down the hood. The next day is when all the action happened. After laying down the primer, the basecoat and the clear, we let it dry overnight. All that was left to do was color sand and polish.
The guys at Macias Auto Body said, "The paint mixed well and was easy to shoot. Also the clear coat covered well and dried fast." I was extremely impressed with the finished product. As you can see, the color match is identical. Yeah buddy, rollin' like a big shot.
