Project Sipper Honda Civic - Put A Fork In It

We're officially done with Project Sipper ... Almost!

Scott Tsuneishi
Dec 20, 2013

For the past three months, we'd shed plenty of blood, sweat, and tears in transforming an otherwise mundane Civic into a full-blown mpg machine. As we promised from the get-go, the car looks nothing like your typical "tree hugger" vehicle, but rather something that show car/performance enthusiasts wouldn't mind driving around town.

Think about it for a second: the ability to turn heads and the added bonus of saving some serious dough at the gas pump with a projected 50 to 60 mpg. Yes, we're completely sober; you read that correctly. We're talking Toyota Prius hybrid fuel economy out of a 21-year-old Honda Civic.

But before we can pat ourselves on the back for a job well done, we're taking this bad boy out on the road to stretch its legs for a little road trip. Err ... scratch that. Call it an extensive road trip-a grand finale mpg test that will consist of chugging along on the highway roads for five days at a rate of 500 miles a day with Import Tuner partner-in-crime Charles Trieu, and James Yim and Cale Bunker of Falken Tire.

I'd like to imagine that this trek will be a piece of cake, and we will be gone and back with plenty of time to relax for the weekend, but nothing is ever as easy as it seems. By the time you've read this, our trip will have officially been a bust or an astounding success. We're confident it's going to be the latter, but, regardless, it's going to be one hell of a trip!

What begins as an itch to lower your car's ride height, turns into a full-blown coilover installation. We should all be familiar with the thought process—because let's face it, wheel gap is just unattractive.
