The Straight Story Pt.7

May 1, 2004

Honda Tuning reveals the blood, sweat and tears that go into creating a competitive all-motor drag car by building our own CRX racer. For part seven the techs at Serenity Sound & Performance bolt up the tranny and squeeze the plant into its new home, an ED9 CRX Si chassis.

Hey, kids, welcome to chapter seven of the project with no end! Serenity technician Vy Le gets things rollin' by installing a pilot bearing into the Advanced Clutch Technologies XACT flywheel we'll be using. The CNC-machined piece is forged out of chrome-moly and comes pre-balanced, making it ideal for racing.Le uses a piece of wood and a non-impact mallet to evenly tap the bearing into place. Admittedly this is sort of the ghetto way to do this (if you have access to a press, use that instead), but it worked for us.

NEXT TIME: We've got axles, extended wheel studs, and Lexan comin'--see you for part eight!

Previous Installments
June 2003: The roll cage is installed and the block is sleeved.
July 2003: The head is ported and polished and the suspension is installed.
September 2003: The rotating assembly is blueprinted and balanced.
November 2003: The bottom end is assembled and the one-piece fiberglass front end is installed.
December 2003: The block and head are mated, and wheels and tires are chosen.
March 2004: Final touches to motor

The decision to incorporate forced induction on our project car wasn't a difficult one. Rather than struggle to wring 5 or 10 horsepower from the native F20C with bolt-ons, we're reaching for turbo power
