Dear Jesus,
I've been racing Honda for years but never cared about the name of the body style 'til I was looking through your mag. I see a few '92-95 Civic hatches in Super Street, sometimes they're called EG and other times EH. I thought it might be different because they're from the US or Japan but I've seen both being right-hand drive. I drive an American '93 Civic DX hatch, which is it? Also, does EG and EH stand for anything? Thank you for your help and all of the sexy Hondas in your mag.
Thanks,
Gene Presley
It seems you have stumbled onto to the ever-controversial chassis code debate. To be technical your guess of JDM vs USDM is correct. The chassis code on Honda vehicles stems from the 4th, 5th and 6th character on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). To save time, I'll skip going into detail on the other 14 characters of the VIN and just focus on what these three characters mean. These three indicate the Chassis and the Engine. All USDM model '92-95 Hatchbacks are EH Chassis followed by either the number 2 (CX, DX and VX models D15XX engines) or the number 3 (Si model D16Z6 Engine). Therefore, your car is technically an EH2. However, it's commonplace to refer to these models as "EGs" and most people will know exactly what you're talking about if you say "I have an EG hatch" even though it technically describes the right-hand versions. So call it what you want, it's your car!
Sincerely,
Jesus
