Record Alert! We know this is coming to you three months late, but such is the bane of the monthly publication's long lead time. Nevertheless, it should be mentioned, no heralded at the top of our lungs: Christian Rado shattered the record for the fastest quarter-mile in a unibody front-wheel-drive car with a 9.528 at157.17 (and backing it up with a 9.731 at 152.23) at the Battle of the Imports in Virginia on June 3. "It feels great, but I haven't achieved what I set out to achieve," says Chris. "Last year, I said I wanted to have the first 8-second unibody, and I'm not going to be happy until that happens."
Keep It Off The StreetThis is where we feature your crashes and give you the chance to tell your side of the story to help others from repeating your mistakes. Send all photos and stories to: Keep It Off The Street, Super Street, 6420 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048.
Dear Super Street,This letter is in regards to the readers' crashes section. On July 4, 1998, my '95 Honda Civic EX was totaled on the way to the Peer Pressure car show in Corvalis, Oregon.
After staying up all Friday night, at 6 a.m. we met at our local shop in Medford. On the way to the show (approximately 2.5 hours away) I felt too tired and opted to allow another guy to drive my car while I rode in the passenger seat.
He and another club member started darting in and out of traffic in a race. The guy driving my car lost control, hit a bump in the center of the freeway, and flipped us onto the top of the car, crushing the front of the roof, fenders, hood, headlights, front bumper, and bending my rear axle. Not to mention (ruining) the paint job.
We both walked away unscratched-lucky! After reading about various cars that had crashed, this shows how serious it can be, but the most precious thing survived: our lives.Steve JohnstonTalent, OR
Cyber StreetIf you're already logged onto the Web and are having problems finding the section where we show you how to hack Napster in our Cyber Street section, well here it is. We've officially moved Cyber Street into the News section. As always, we will show you both some cool automotive and non-automotive Web sites that were worthy of our lunchbreak to browse through. And if you have any Web sites that you would like us to check out or if you have a concrete way to hack the Nap, then drop us a line at sstreet@emapUSA.com with the subject line Cyber Street.
AE86 projectwww.geocities.com/MotorCity/Flats/4936Since we know you're a bunch of Web addicts, we know that you'll like looking at AE86s. Say what? Were you following along in our Dorifto issue? An AE86 is the name used to describe the chassis designation of the early generation Toyota Corolla family, specifically the '85-'87 GTS coupe and hatchback models. Just the way Techies (Robotech fans) search out every last Minmei artifact on the market, there's the same kind of huge underground following for what could be one of the greatest drift machines ever.
The Webmaster goes into detail about his friends' cars and includes a small spotlight on his own. Their group, along with many other AE86 enthusiasts, meets every so often to shoot the bull and enjoy each other's rides. While most of the site is seemingly in need of an update, it's interesting to see the different modifications you can do to a Hachiroku. If you agree with the following statement: Trueno/Levin front end conversions rule over any Integra Type R fascia; and deciding if a set of Advan Onis or Data Longchamps would look better tucked under the wheelwells, then congratulations. You're an AE86 fanatic.
