The future of Formula 1 racing is here. No limits on technology. Racing on the streets instead of the tracks. All these elements were thrown together for your personal pleasure. Downforce can be considered part simulation, part arcade racer. There are some very realistic aspects to the game such as when you hit the wall or hit another car your vehicle will get damaged. The car dynamics such as traction, braking, and aerodynamics are all realistic, while the fact that the cars use electromagnetic brakes and jet thrusters to get around, retains the original arcadey feel as well as the fact that it's primarily a "gas-brake-steer" type of game. Most of the game is very dark, requiring you to keep your wits about you and your reflexes sharp. The racing isn't easy either.
The computer-controlled drivers are trying to win, and if you mess up, you will lose--like I did. Not to say that the game is hard, but it does require skill to get through it. There are no less than eight different modes of play. From Career Mode to Versus, there should be something to keep you entertained. The game's framerate stays high even when your car is flying through the air in flames after a crash with pieces bouncing around everywhere. Not that it has happened to me at all.
Downforce is one of those racing games you can pick up and just play when you are taking a break from the more serious automotive titles out there without being so far from reality that you wouldn't enjoy it. Definitely worth the rental, and I can see many of you hardcore racers just spending the dough to buy it.
