I'm a chicken, I'll admit it. I wouldn't want to get drafted or have anything to do with the military because I don't want to get hurt. Call me a big baby, I don't care. (You're a big baby.-JN) Running around in the 125-degree weather with 75 pounds of supplies on my back isn't my idea of a summer vacation, and quite frankly, I don't possess the strength to do so. Until now. Being able to sit in my living room in front of my 55-inch TV and command a squad of buff military dudes to go blow stuff up is a lot more like it. SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals is just that game. SOCOM is a third-person (most of the time) military simulator that has you, the player in command of an elite fighting force, sent on missions that involve everything from rescuing hostages to gathering intelligence, to just blowing stuff up. Either way, this game is focused on teamwork, not just randomly shooting at moving objects. While the scenery may not be the most inspiring in the one-level demo I received, it helped bring the focus to the mission at hand. Having two guys go to a building and take out a sniper while you and another soldier blow up the supply shack is rewarding in its own right.
One of the best features of the game is that when you buy it you get a free headset in the box that allows you to use voice recognition to give commands to your computerized team. Even better, it allows you to talk to your live teammates when this game goes online this year-plus I like to use it as a cell phone accessory. If you like military sims that involve strategy versus an all-out fire fight, SOCOM may be the one for you. Or if you are a couch-bound war-chicken like me, you might want to find this one on your local game store shelf.
