If you are a fan of adventure games and you haven't picked up Ratchet and Clank yet, what are you waiting for? An engraved invitation from Sony? Buy it, rent it, borrow it, whatever, get it today. We've literally had weeks of fun.
As we popped open the disk tray, we hoped for a winner and crossed our fingers. After Sly Cooper, we thought it would be difficult to impress us with another adventure game. Huh!, were we ever wrong on that front. Honestly, it took a minute, maybe even less, of watching the intro animation for us to be totally into it. We hit the Start button and jumped into some of the most dynamic, different, and colorful worlds we've been to in our Playstation gaming history. With easy, straight to the point control buttons, you can basically turn it On and play. It doesn't get any better than that.
Your job is to save Clank's planet from being destroyed by the evil Drek. Drek's planet has been ruined by over-population and over-pollution, and now he seeks to build a new planet using "parts" from other planets in the galaxy. Here is where the fun begins. Once your ship lands, check your missions and get to it. Put your skills to the test while exploring each unique world, destroying your enemies and mastering new skills along the way.
Pay attention to the fantastic, original soundtrack. The music changes depending on your location and situation adding an amazing element to your game experience. Just like in the movies you'll know when trouble's coming. The Weapon Quickselect is a unique feature that lets you whiz through your weapons inventory so you don't lose a second blasting your way through the enemies. Hands down, our favorite weapon is the "Glove of Doom", one shot and 5 mini-robots pop out, race ahead and obliterate the bad guys for you. How cool is that? Other great inventive weapons include the Bomb Glove, the Morph-o-ray (to turn attackers into chickens!), the Pyrocitor (to toast your foes in fire), the all-purpose Blaster, and the Omniwrench 8000. As Rachet says, "If you can't get a wrench around it, blast it!" And for this game, that's all you need to know.
After completing the assigned planetary missions, it's time to jump in your space ship and rocket off to save another world. During each ride, you'll view another animated short. Our advice: Don't skip it! You find important clues and maps here. These mini-cartoons keep the pace of the game upbeat and moving forward, with the added bonus of having a few hilarious scenes. In what has been a bumper crop of excellent games released by Sony in the last quarter of '02, Ratchet and Clank surpassed even our high standards, and we give it a strong 5 nukes.
