Not to sound too geeky, but we were counting the days until Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando was released. After the spectacular debut of Ratchet and Clank last year a whole new standard was set for action-adventure platform games. Ratchet and Clank scored big on two fronts. The first was that it became an immediate hit selling a gazillion copies, and the second was that it garnered rave reviews across the board. Ratchet fans had some high expectations for the sequel, hoping for more of the same great features of the first--made bigger and better, of course-plus a slew of new additions. Insomniac Games knows the score. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando is undoubtedly bigger and better in this truly stellar video game sequel.
First, if you don't have a chunk of time to play this game don't fire it up in the PS2, because once you start to play it's all over--you're there for the long haul. Returning players will find that the controls are the same, so there is no need to learn a whole new control scheme, plus tips and hints are given along the way just in case you're new to the series. Ratchet's movements are fluid, as is the functioning of the camera, so gamers won't be crashing or dying because of a stuck Ratchet or a wonky camera angle. How's this for a great new feature? Stick in your memory card with your original Ratchet and Clank game saved, and you can "purchase" several favorite weapons returning for Going Commando for FREE. Sweet, eh?
Speaking of weapons, Insomniac provides the greatest weapons and gadgets in the whole gaming universe. Come on now, how can you not love a Gravity Bomb gun that upgrades into a full-on Mini-Nuke complete with mini-mushroom cloud? Or, the Chopper? Any weapon named "Chopper" automatically gets our thumbs up, because no matter what it does it's gonna be cool and cruel. Hey, we're here to defeat the enemy, not to have tea. Besides, the Chopper upgrades into the Multi-Star which breaks apart into three mini-choppers and as the game guide says it gives a whole new meaning to "projectile mayhem."
In a nod toward the RPG genre, the weapons are upgradeable and so is Ratchet. His skills and power increase with the amount of bolts collected and bad guys bashed. To balance the fighting evenly, AI enemies also grow in expertise and muscle. Players should definitely appreciate the fact that developers paid close attention to the AI, because there's nothing worse than being forced out of upper-level or even mid-level game rankings because of impossible gameplay. Even though it's almost boring to say it, but the graphics and playability are once again of the highest quality. You will never see a drag, a stall, or a hesitation here plus, loading times between missions are nearly non-existent. Innovative, brand new worlds in an all-new galaxy are superb and the added "maxi-games" give gamers the opportunity to play them over and over for experience and big, bolt bonanzas. Bolts means new weapons, ammo, upgrades--even the illegal kind. Illegal modification shops are located throughout the game, and if you've got the cash, you can definitely score something wicked. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando is one of the few titles out there that has not only managed to keep all of the best parts of the original game, but has also capitalized on what we liked best, and made it fresher and better than the original. Do yourself a favor-if you haven't already bought it, buy it. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando is one of the top three titles released in 2003, and will certainly go on to superstar game status. Insomniac Games has produced the very best at every level in this game, omitting no detail, and promises to provide players with a terrific gaming experience from beginning to end. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando gets five nukes.
