In the last few years, platform games have been renewed and revitalized, and gamers are taking notice by snatching up new titles as soon as they hit the shelves. THQ's Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is one of the latest platform games released late last year. Sphinx is a beautifully rendered 3D ancient Egyptian world that will have gamers immediately immersed in the setting and storyline. Gamers will take turns playing as both Sphinx and the Mummy in order to save the world from evil domination by the dark god Set, and reverse an evil spell that will turn the Mummy back into his human form--young King Tutankhamen.
Having spent quite a few days in outer space fighting the hordes in faraway galaxies, we were more than ready to travel back in time for our latest adventure. The world of Sphinx is gorgeously imagined and executed. It doesn't take long to feel like you are creeping through ancient palaces and over hot desert sand. Like all great game soundtracks, Sphinx's is cinema quality and totally creates the mood of the moment, from serene to dangerous. Players should keep their ears and eyes open to anticipate what might be coming up next.
With a hint of flavor drawn from the RPG genre, there are puzzles to solve in order to get items to help Sphinx on his quest-but don't worry, there's enough action to keep things moving. Sphinx gains powers and the use of different weapons, while the Mummy is the weapon! Whatever it takes to get the job done, the Mummy is down with it. He'll light himself on fire, become an electrical conduit, smash himself paper-thin, split into three mini-mummies and best of all he'll acquire the hard to reach goods that are impossible for Sphinx to get. The Mummy is fun and funny to play and gives the game a good dose of humor.
Load times are not bad, the waiting is never too long, and the controls of the game are smooth and easy to use. One of our few wishes for the game would be voice actors instead of the subtitles for all the dialogue, and the ability to skip through some of the cut scenes and intros and get right to the gameplay once you've already watched the clip.
Sphinx should appeal to gamers of all levels, as it has a little bit of everything thrown in for good measure. There are puzzles to solve, objects to acquire, monsters to slay, curses to lift, a woman to save and an evil, dark god to defeat, what's not to like? Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, is a great-looking, fun, action-adventure game that will keep players interested and gaming until reaching the end. Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy gets four nukes.
