Sony's Hot Shot golf series is one of our favorites, and this year's latest addition, Hot Shots Golf Fore! is jammed with great features old and new. Gamers can expect to see tons of familiar favorites, plus new and unexpected characters, online functionality, fantastic game physics, and the return of Mini-golf making this one of the most addicting games out there.
Hot Shots is labeled a sports game, but is really more universal in its appeal, because it is not a "simulator" type game. The fun cartoon-like characters give the game its light-hearted humor, but underneath all that fun is a dynamic physics engine. Players can count on the ball trajectory to be true-to-life as factors like wind direction and velocity, weather conditions, and course terrain effects how far the ball travels and where it lands.
HSG4 takes advantage of the new AI capabilities by incorporating an "intuitive" system that will adjust the game's difficulty based on how a player is doing. As an example, we landed in the sand way more times than we'd like to admit, and to give us hand, we found that we were able to "blast" our way out of the trap to make a great fairway landing or even landing close to the pin.
The exciting addition of online functionality makes it even easier to play a round of golf with friends near and far. Gamers can go online to choose to play either a single person game or one with up to four players, or even enter an online tournament to play in real time. Offline game modes include Tour Mode, Tournament, VS Mode, and Training, and back by popular demand is Mini-golf. There are over a dozen courses to challenge players from long courses to a tough little 3-par guaranteed to put a player's skills to the test. Favorite characters are making their return to this title, as well as some surprises that show up from other Sony titles. Four that we've spotted so far have been Jak and Daxter, and our favorites, Ratchet and Clank.
After a series of late night and weekend marathons we're still hooked. Hot Shots Golf Fore! doesn't disappoint and only gets more fun the more a gamer plays. It also gets cheers from us for including favorites from the series, and pushing it to the next level of technology with it's great physics and intuitive AI. Hot Shots Golf Fore! is one of the few games that can actually boast that there is something for everyone.
