We heard only great news about Capcom's Viewtiful Joe before we had the chance to play it, and we couldn't wait to find out why everyone was doing back flips for this game. One thing is certain, Viewtiful Joe needs to be played to actually fully appreciate the artistry and innovation that was dreamed up and then put into this game. What makes Viewtiful Joe so kick-ass is that it is both a 2D and 3D cel-shaded, side-scrolling action fighting game. Gamers play as Joe and get to be the hero, wear a cool super suit, get awesome super powers, and of course, save the girl from the clutches of evil.
The story starts with Joe and his girlfriend Silvia spending a little quality time together, hanging out to watch a movie when everything goes haywire. The bad guys in the movie reach out of their world and to pull Silvia into the movie, and as Joe goes after her, he too ends up in the same cool 2D/3D world. Luckily for Joe, he meets his favorite superhero, Captain Blue, who hooks up Joe with some sweet fighting moves, some super hero gear, and the all important super powers. But, like any great action fighting game, it's going to take more than super fighting powers to get Silvia back safely. Gamers will need to use their puzzle-solving skills to get through levels along with Joe's new Viewtiful fighting style that uses slick fighting combos and VFX super powers.
A nice feature included in more and more games is the ability to select a skill level before starting out, and Viewtiful Joe lets players select from three skill levels. Controls and cameras are smooth allowing players to move Joe easily and to see the whole scene without problems or wonky camera angles. Plus, there are hidden playable characters to unlock like Dante from Devil May Cry--all rendered in Viewtiful Joe style. Sweet. Viewtiful Joe is not only a great animated treat to look at, but it's addicting as hell, and after playing, gamers are guaranteed to agree with Joe's catch-phrase: "Life is Viewtiful."
