Reviewing a new RPG is always a serious investment of time in order to get a good feel for the game, the characters, and the adventure presented. Fortuneately, the hours flew by as we entered into the realm of Midway's sequel "Shadow Hearts: Covenant." Slip back in time to war-torn Europe of World War I to begin a compelling journey that will have characters Yuri and Karin taking on traveling companions before setting out to rid the world of dangerous creatures and figure out who is behind the plan to let loose a terrible evil to infect the world.
"Shadow Hearts: Covenant" fills two DVDs, so be prepared for a nice, long journey--this is not a game to whip through in a few hours. A new combat system called the "Judgment Ring" lets gamers cast spells, build up magical abilities, use strategy and hit combos to defeat hordes of enemies large and small, and it does add a huge injection of fun into the turn-based fighting system. Each character comes equipped with unique skills and magical abilities, and it's up to gamers to learn how best to use each member of their team during the frequently encountered battles. There are numerous opportunities for building up skills and magic, and with each level upgrade gamers will notice boosts in their hitting power.
Gamers can look forward to a great sequel to the original Shadow Hearts game. With it's gorgeous graphics and CGI cut scenes, new Judgment Ring combat system, and a deep storyline that takes gamers on an epic adventure of good vs. evil, RPG fans definitely should give Shadow Hearts: Covenant a turn in the PS2.
