Last month, we introduced the brand new XMODS RC Car to Super Street Online readers. This month, in part 1 of our 3 part series, we will show you what's included in each kit, along with preparing the car for kitchen floor battle in the 24 hours of LeNoleum. Part 2 will explore the myriad of modifications available for the cars and in Part 3 we will give you some driving impressions before and after each mod. Each car comes complete with chassis, your choice of body (Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec, 2000 Honda Civic Coupe, 1997 Toyota Supra, or the 2003 Acura RSX), Stage 1 motor capable of 26,000 RPM (a modified motor is also available), wheels, tires, and a transmitter. All you will need to get the car running is a set of four AAA batteries for the car and one 9 Volt battery for the transmitter. It's highly recommended that you purchase NiMH rechargeable batteries. Beware of the typical run-of-the-mill NiCD batteries. They don't offer the same performance and longevity as NiMH cells (Click on the sponsored links below for a full selection of NiMH batteries for XMODS).
Here is a shot of the chassis/motor/suspension. Each chassis comes standard with four-wheel independent suspension for good all around grip. That little red label sticking out is the receiver crystal. It is interchangeable, allowing you and your friends to all race at the same time. Twelve frequencies are offered. The transmitter features steering trim and throttle trim, allowing you to fine tune the alignment and response of the car. This silver pocket rocket fits into the palm of your hand. The lovely Kelly will be called on to install a few rounds of modifications in Part 2 of our series, but first...
We start off by assembling the body. Since I had to shoot the pictures, I enlisted the help of Motor Trend Web Developer Mike Malone. Mike's no mechanic, so it just goes to show how easy it really is to assemble an XMODS. The front and rear bumpers, side skirts, hood, and side-view mirrors are all installed with the supplied Phillps screwdriver. It's a good idea to get a small dish or towel to help retain the screws while you work so they don't get lost. The digital geeks we are, we opted to use a CD case.
Since the car is pretty much assembled, all that's left as far as chassis prep is bolting on the wheels and tires. Be sure not to over-tighten the bolts, as this may cause the wheels to bind, slowing the car down. Be sure to install the batteries before you drop the body on. To install the antenna, remove the existing Phillips screw. Place the screw into the loop of the antenna and tighten.
