Support the vehicle with a lift or jackstands. Unscrew the stock shift knob. The exhaust pipe will be in the way, so make sure it’s not hot. To allow yourself more room, unhook the two rubber exhaust hangers near the catalytic converter, and use a crowbar near the rear of the car to prop the exhaust away from the frame. Use a 12mm socket to remove the bolt that holds the shift lever to the shift rod.

It might be better to wait to slip on the locator O-rings until the lever is installed, but this photo clearly depicts how they work. With three O-rings on one side and one on the other, the B&M shifter stays in the stock neutral 3-4 shift position. For 1994-1997 Integras, the O-rings can be rearranged to produce a more racing-oriented neutral 1-2 shift position.

Remove the rubber rear mount from the shift extension. Note that the end of the shift extension is flared. The flare (approximately 1/4-inch in length) must be cut off in order for the new aluminum rear mount to fit. Use a hacksaw to accomplish this. With the flare removed, use a rubber mallet to install the B&M rear mount.

Push the circular factory rubber mount out of the front of the shift extension. Install the new two-piece aluminum eccentric mount. Tighten the Allen bolt so the main bolt hole is in the desired position. When the Allen bolt is below the bolt hole, the shift lever will be in the stock position. If the Allen bolt is located to the left or right of the hole, the shift lever will be located approximately 1-1/4 inches forward or backward.

Use a 12mm socket and bolt to attach the front eccentric mount and shift extension to the transmission. Do not use grease on this mount. Given the varying anatomical sizes of the Super Street staff monkeys, the Allen bolt was left vertical, keeping the Integra’s shift lever in stock position.

It’s no secret that Honda and Acura shifters are regarded as some of the best in auto land. So a company that offers aftermarket shift components for Civics and Integras is either really stupid or really savvy about what it’s doing. B&M falls into the latter category.

The company has approached Honda shifter improvements with two products: the Shift Stabilizer System and the Edge short-throw shift lever. The Shift Stabilizer System consists of CNC aluminum shift-rod mounts that replace the factory rubber pieces. Besides reducing flex, the mounts allow custom positioning of the shift lever either forward or backward in relation to your hand.

The B&M shift lever differs from the stock unit in a couple of ways. The first is that the B&M Edge shifter is straight rather than bent, which is said to give better leverage than stock. The second alteration is a counterbalanced bottom; the extra few ounces are designed to provide a more direct and accurate shift.

Normally, weight is not something you want to add to a vehicle, but in this particular instance, weight is good. We installed both the B&M Edge shifter and the Shift Stabilizer System in a 1994 Integra. Right after the installation process (when our impressions of the stock shifter were freshest), we found that the B&M shifter’s throws were definitely shorter. The action required a bit more effort, but the result was a more positive feel.

Does this sound like something you'd like to have on your car? Well, follow along as we detail the installation of both the Edge shifter and the Shift Stabilizer System.
