New Zealand drifter "Mad Mike" Whiddett recently released his latest project entitled "Conquer the Crown."  The Crown Range is a prime piece of tarmac in between Queenstown and Wanaka consisting of plenty hairpins and S-turns.  Mike took his 26b 4 rotor powered "Madbul" Mazda FD RX7 to New Zealand's highest main road at an altitude of 1121 metres elevation.

According to Mike the Madbul RX7 is similar to driving a 125cc two-stroke motocross bike which means clutch kicks for days and a right foot glued down to the acceleration pedal.   Watch the video and see Mike release 500 plus horses on tarmac driving approximately 145mph, pushing both himself and the car to the extreme.

Back in 1970 the original Datsun 240Z revolutionized the U.S. automotive landscape.  It provided consumers with the latest in Japanese technology, design, and performance at an affordable price. A personal GT car for the masses, if you will...  Here we are some 40-years later and Nissan continues to build on its performance pedigree with the updated 2014 Nissan 370Z Nismo edition.  

 As with previous Nismo Zs, the refreshed model is powered by a 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine that pumps out 350 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque.  It's only offered with a close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox paired with Nissan's SynchroRev Match, and features an H-configured exhaust system and an optimized engine control module calibration.  The car is available in both coupe and roadster configurations.

The big changes for the 2014 model center on the exterior and interior. The front and rear fascias will be colored dark gray as well as the lower side sills, side mirrors, and Nismo rear spoiler, while an extended nose design and chin spoiler have been redesigned to provide enhanced airflow and downforce.  Solid Red also replaces Magma Red as one of the four exterior colors. Inside, the cabin now features Nismo logo seats, an Alcantra wrapped steering wheel, and a Nismo tachometer.

The Nismo Z will be equipped with 5-spoke Nissan-branded 19-inch RAYS forged aluminum-alloy wheels wrapped with Bridgestone Potenza tires.  Nismo Sport brakes have been added for stopping power.  What does this all add up to?  A race inspired car ready to hit up the streets.  

It's the age-old question, new school or old school? In this video recently featured on our Motor Trend YouTube channel simply called Project 370Z, Nissan asked its multitude of Z car fans to create the ultimate 370Z track beast. Fans also had the chance to pick a challenger for the 370Z, which turned out to be a Datsun 240Z.  But in case you thought it wouldn't be a fair fight, rest assured this isn't your average 240Z.  This particular example has the heart of a RB26DETT beating under the hood. 

 Built by Gordon MacSwain from Columbus, Ohio, the Datsun produces around 360 horsepower.  The Nissan 370Z, built by Steve Lam, was a fierce contender as well, as it was equipped with a turbo kit from Greddy.  The epic showdown took place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  So did the newer 370Z with advance technology win? Or did the Japanese nostalgic car show it who was boss?

The 2013 New York International Auto Show is an exciting event, as it reveals to the world many of the newest and hottest 2013-2014 production models and concept vehicles like the Subaru WRX concept, Subaru's vision of what its next-gen performance model is likely to become.  The concept integrates a bold new design with what will no doubt be an evolution of the WRX's unmistakable turbocharged power and AWD grip.

Under the hood lies a new turbocharged boxer engine and intercooler that Subaru wasn't ready to divulge, but the engine is widely expected to be a version of Subaru's 2.0-liter turbo that recently debuted in the 2014 Forester.  

For the WRX concept, a carbon-roof is used to enhance its low center of gravity and of course help reduce weight. Out front, Subaru designed a new hawk-eye headlight design and a larger bolder grille, but still keeps it classic with a version of the WRX's trademark hood scoop.  The rear design reflects the front grille and employs a slick integrated spoiler, and its broad fenders are accompanied by a set of BBS "RI-Ds" one piece forged duralumin wheels with Dunlop tires.  

Even just as a concept the car looks great. The legendary rally car will now be lower and wider.  It's only a matter of time till you see the production model, we're guessing by early 2014 at the latest.  Ball is on your court, Mitsubishi.  Evo XI, anyone?

By now you've probably seen many Justice League inspired Kia cars in our magazine and on our Web site.  But what many of you may not know is what we're doing it for.  Super Street has partnered with Kia Motors America and DC Entertainment for the "We Can Be Heroes" Campaign designed to raise awareness and funds to fight the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. 

Last year alone the campaign raised some $2 million that helped provide aid to roughly five million men, women, and children in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.  This year the campaign matched iconic Justice League characters from DC Entertainment such as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg with various cars from the Kia stable.  Today at the 2013 New York International Auto Show Wonder Woman joins the team with a specially adorned 2013 Kia Sportage.  

DC Entertainment matched the Sportage with Wonder Woman with the goal of projecting balance, power, agility, and confidence.  The compact crossover features an aggressive aero kit with a red and blue color scheme, accented with stars inspired by Wonder Woman's outfit.  The "Lasso of Truth" is represented by the gold trim wrapped around the Sportage.  Wonder Woman's legendary eagle chest-plate emblem has been integrated on the front grille and was paired with blue headlight beams that represent her blue eyes.  The interior received the Wonder Woman treatment as well, with red upholstery and dash pieces.  Her logo is embroidered on the custom seats, and the cargo area is decorated with stars and an eagle.  

The 2013 Kia Sportage is available with either a 2.4 liter 176 horsepower engine or a 2.0-liter, 260 horsepower Turbo GDI engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.  Inside, the Sportage is available with Kia's latest in-vehicle technologies, including the UVO Powered by Microsoft hands-free, voice activated infotainment system.  Prices start at roughly $19,000.

 We were recently at the Donald E Stephens Convention Center in the Windy City (that's Chicago) to attend the fourth annual Tuner Galleria show.  An array of vehicle types showed up, from American muscle to exotic cars – and of course, Japanese – to compete in the main event.  Aside from the car competition attendees had the chance to catch various dance competitions, talent contests and watch fashion/bikini (our personal favorite) shows.  Anthony Shockwave with his Chevrolet Corvette took home the prestigious Best of Show award.  For more coverage of Tuner Galleria 2013, you'll have to wait for the June issue, out April 23, 2013!

Auto Fashion USA celebrated the grand opening of their new location in San Diego, CA this past weekend. Haven't heard of them? They're known mostly for their VIP expertise but can do plenty of things from audio to performance. In addition, they can do full graphics for any type of vehicle and are a Vape retailer.  Whether you like the new Toyobaru or not, there's no denying that the car is proving to be an automotive phenomenon. Sold here as the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, the sporty coupes have already been scored several car of the year awards and have drawn praise the world over. We've heard rumblings of a convertible version of the car for some time now, and at the 2013 Geneva auto show Toyota showcased what we can expect in the form of the its FT-86 Open Concept.

To capture the spirit of Milan, Toyota Boshoku Milan Design used a bright white and navy blue color scheme.  No changes have been made to the engine, meaning it's still equipped with a 2.0-liter Subaru-sourced boxer engine with 200 horsepower.  The concept employs a six-speed automatic that Toyota says is the world's fastest paddle shift speed, at two tenths of a second. Hopefully the coming production convertible will be available with the six-speed manual as well. Owners will be able to tuck away the fabric roof behind the rear seats to retain the car's 2+2 format. Features such as frameless doors have been used to adapt to the open top design. 

The car still needs further engineering to configure the changes from the original GT-86 to a convertible such as vehicle rigidity, balance, and weight, but there's little doubt we'll see a version of the Open Concept before too long in Scion and Subaru showrooms

Yokohama Tire Corporation is expanding its factory support to three teams for the upcoming 2013 Formula Drift season. New to the roster are GSR Autosport's BMW E46 at the hands of Michael Essa and GTNET's Tomei Powered Subaru BRZ piloted by Toshiki Yoshioka. Pat Morduant will be returning as the driver for the Apexi-I Lexus SC430.  It will be Yokohama's second consecutive year as a tire supplier for the Formula D series.

 GSR Autosport has previously teamed up with Yokohama on other road-racing programs.  It's no different in the drifting world. GSR Autosports believes that it's imperative to partner with what it believes to be the best tire maker in the business to counter the rise in drifting competition.  

Driver Yoshioka is a force to be reckoned with as he partners with Yokohama. Not only has he participated in Formula Drift, but he's also a veteran of Japan's D1 Grand Prix series. The multi-talented wheel man will also be competing at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.  

The three teams will be running on ADVAN Neova AD08 and S. Drive tires. Formula Drift is a seven-event series, which starts at the Long Beach Grand Prix on April 12-13.  Keep your eyes peeled for these talented drifters and the Yokohamas they'll be smoking up.  

We never thought we’d be working with super heroes in our lifetime, but now DC Entertainment is giving us a chance to help fight hunger in their upcoming “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, to be unveiled at various events around the US, including the 2012 SEMA Show, North American International Auto Show, New York Comic-Con and San Diego Comic-Con. Working alongside Kia Motors America, you’ll see their Optima, Soul, Sorento, Sportage Rio and Forte models take customization to super hero levels as key collaborators will be brought in to help transform these cars to represent members of the Justice League, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg.

By building these vehicles through “We Can Be Heroes”, DC Entertainment hopes they’ll inspire and encourage everyday people to join the fight by “getting involved and donating to bring help and hope to the people most affected by the hunger crisis”. Each build will feature custom-designed artwork by legendary comic book artist and DC Entertainment Co-Publisher, Jim Lee, that will be auctioned off at the end of the program with all proceeds going to the “We Can Be Heroes” program, and in addition, every car built for the project will also be auctioned off to help raise more money.

More than 1000 racing companies will occupy 700,000 square feet of exhibit space when the massive Performance Racing Industry Trade Show—the centerpiece of Race Industry Week 2012—arrives in Orlando, Florida, in late November.

2012 Never Looked So Cool

Mishimoto is thrilled to be continuing a partnership with Chris Rado of WORLD Racing in the 2012 Global Time Attack season. Global Time Attack is an extremely demanding motorsport that truly pushes a car to its limits. Rado's Need for Speed Scion tC will be equipped with a Mishimoto aluminum radiator and heat reflective tape to keep the operating temperatures of the powerful beast at bay. After many seasons watching Rado and WORLD Racing break track records and sweep classes, we're certain that 2012 will be yet another extremely successful year for Rado.
