Just a week away from SEMA and we’re already getting bombarded with party invitations and press conferences. Yesterday, we were lucky to get a sneak peak at the 2011 Scion Tuner Challenge. We’ve seen similar challenges with models like the xB and tC but this is Scion’s “smallest” challenge yet! Get it?

The iQ is expected to be released in December and should be a hit in congested metropolitan cities. These three cars featured here are to help showcase the car and the imagination behind some of the best car builders in the scene. The winner will be selected at SEMA on Wednesday, November 2.

What’s our personal favorite? Well, you’ll just have to wait and find out in an upcoming Super Street issue.

High performance synthetic lubricant manufacturer Royal Purple recently expanded its Porter, Texas production facility.  Six new 35,000 gallon blend tanks were added.   According to Royal Purple Production manager Leigh McClellan, the additional tanks were added in order to help Royal Purple to stay ahead of its double digit sales growth.

'We've see increased demand for both industrial and consumer markets products', says McClellan.   "New tankage was necessary for us to continue JIT production".  Royal Purple will also install two new packaging lines, doubling production's packaging capacity.

This year Royal Purple has introduced several new products to the automotive retail market including the new High Performance Street (HPS) series of high performance automotive motor oils, its new High Performance Marine (HPM) line of lubricants, a 0W-20 API SN-licensed motor oil and a new Racing ATF.

Formula DRIFT prepares for what many are anticipating as the largest event in Formula Drift history with the finale at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. Round 7: Title Fight ending one of the most exciting seasons to date on October 7-8. Tickets are on-sale now.

 Take a closer look at the 7th Annual Japanese Classic Car Show at the Queen Marry in Long Beach this past Saturday September 10th. Here we show you some of the old school imports along with a few street bikes that also attended the show. 

 Season Opener Premieres on Sept. 17 Exclusively on n3D, Powered by Panasonic 

DIRECTV and Formula DRIFT are following last year’s successful 3D broadcast of Formula DRIFT’s “Round 7: Title Fight” event with the premiere of the 2011 season opener, “Round 1: Streets of Long Beach” on Sept.17 at 8 p.m. (ET). This is the first-ever drifting event that takes place on actual city streets to be produced in 3D and will be available exclusively on DIRECTV’s 3D channel n3D, powered by Panasonic (channel 103).

The season opener, held in Long Beach, Calif., on April 8-9, was the only drifting event on the circuit to legally use real city streets. The 3D TV event showcases the action and excitement from the race and is co-hosted by Formula Drift vice president & co-founder, Ryan Sage and the “Voice of Formula Drift” announcer Jarod DeAnda. Lawmakers Acknowledge Importance of Collection and Restoration of Historic and Classic Cars.

 Washington, D.C. (April 15, 2011) -- The United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 154 (S. Res. 154) at the request of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and its Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) and Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Councils designating July 8, 2011 as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.”  The date marks the second commemoration in what will become an annual event to celebrate and raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

S. Res. 154 was sponsored by Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus members Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC).  Senators Tester and Burr have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, and S. Res. 154 reaffirms their understanding of the cultural importance of collector cars.  The Caucus is an informal, non-partisan group that pays tribute to America’s ever growing love affair with the car and motorsports.  The Caucus recognizes the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation’s appreciation for motorsports.  

“Last year, the United States Senate helped launch the first national Collector Car Appreciation Day at our request,” said SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald. “As a result, thousands of Americans gathered at car cruises, parades and other events to celebrate our nation’s automotive heritage. SEMA’s commitment to preserving and promoting the automotive restoration industry through its projects and programs is evident in this special day.  We look forward to even more celebrations this July 8 and in the years to come.”

In recognition of the day, collectors and enthusiasts will be hosting events across the country.  ARMO Chairman Laura Bergan said, “On July 8, 2011, collectors and enthusiasts will host hundreds of events across the country.  We will proudly partner with individuals, car clubs and businesses as they organize car cruises, club gatherings and other educational events to celebrate the day.”

New “Black Edition,” Revised Fascias and Carbon Fiber Interior Trim

– Nissan’s Multi-Dimensional 530-Horsepower Supercar Makes North American Debut at Los Angeles Auto Show, Set to Go On Sale in Early 2011 –

Entering its fourth year of availability in the North American market, the 2012 Nissan GT-R has a new look, new colors, new wheel design and, most important to fans of pure power, more horsepower under the hood. In addition, a new “Black Edition”– with unique seats, interior colors and wheels – joins the GT-R Premium model. The latest iteration of Nissan’s legendary supercar makes its North American debut that the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show and will be available at official “GT-R certified” Nissan dealers across the United States in early 2011.

The 2012 Nissan GT-R’s advanced VR38DETT 3.8-liter twin turbo V6 now produces 530 horsepower (versus the previous 485 horsepower) and 448 lb-ft of torque (versus the previous 434 lb-ft) – a result of modifying the boost pressure of the turbocharger, valve timing and air mixture ratio, and through reducing intake air resistance by enlarging the inlet pipe diameter. In addition, exhaust air resistance was reduced through use of an enlarged section of exhaust pipe.

GT-R’s already impressive aerodynamics have been improved for 2012 with downforce increased by about 10% and the coefficient of drag reduced to 0.26 (from 0.27). Stability is improved by enlarged fascia and grille openings, which also help reduce air resistance inside the engine compartment. The volume of air that passes through the radiator and cools the front brakes is also increased.

The newly refreshed front fascia features aggressive double rectifier fins and new integrated high intensity LED running lights. Additional plated parts are used for the headlight inner panels, enhancing the car’s strong visual presence.

The redesigned rear fascia features a lower center of gravity than the previous design, created by using a sculpted lower section and extended length. Underfloor cooling performance is also enhanced and air resistance reduced by extending the rear diffuser.

In addition, cooling performance for the muffler is improved and rear downforce is increased by about 10% through use of a new rear fascia outlet and new vents on the lower rear fenders that help remove air from the rear wheel wells. Newly designed larger diameter tailpipe finishers are also adopted. Six exterior colors are available, including two new colors: Deep Blue Pearl and Jet Black. Other available colors are Solid Red, Gun Metallic, Pearl White and a limited production 4-stage metallic Super Silver.

GT-R’s newly designed, lighter weight and more rigid forged aluminum 20-inch wheels, once again manufactured by RAYS®, help improve suspension response. Knurling inside the wheels is modified to help keep the tires from slipping around the wheels under heavy acceleration or braking. The wheels also feature a new premium dark (near black) finish, which provides a high quality, high-performance look. The Black Edition features special black six-spoke RAYS® lightweight wheels in place of the Premium model’s 10-spoke design.

Inside, the revisions for 2012 include new carbon fiber trim and upgraded materials. The Black Edition adds custom red-trimmed Recaro® seats, red and black interior trim and a dark headliner.

As a lifelong gearhead with roots tracing back to the Motor City, I am very proud to take on the responsibility of leading America's premier automotive enthusiast network in the battle to protect our cherished heritage.  In an era of increasing governmental involvement in the hobby, it is imperative that we remain organized and stand together.  We must continue to ensure that lawmakers, both on Capitol Hill and in state houses across the nation, hear our voices loudly and proudly.  We will not stand idly and allow America's automotive traditions to be legislated out of existence.  In addition, we will promote pro-active policies that benefit the hobby.  As I assume the mantle of this great organization, that is my pledge to you.

I come to this job abundantly aware that the fight to defend the hobby from aggressive regulation may not be easy, but it is a necessary one.  For 14 years, the SAN has staved off attacks from forces seeking to create obstacles to our responsible enjoyment of this hobby and made strides towards ensuring its future.  Continue to stay informed.  Respectfully let your legislators know where you stand on the issues.  Most importantly, spread the word.  Let your friends, family, and fellow enthusiasts know the vital importance of SAN's mission and to join the cause.  As always, joining the SAN at  http://www.semasan.com/san/join.aspx  is FREE and carries no obligations.

MACHETE Is Here! 

SA Studios partnered with FOX to create an unforgettable Los Angeles screening of MACHETE. Expanding on themes from the film, pre-show festivities included a parade of 20 lowriders handpicked by legendary artist Mister Cartoon. MACHETE star Danny Trejo led the procession on a custom motorcycle.

Co-stars Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez seemed right at home riding shotgun in classic cars, waving to fans while paparazzi snapped photos of this truly unique moment. MACHETE director Robert Rodriguez was on hand to introduce the film with his unmistakable enthusiasm. Don Johnson and Cheech Marin, members of the film's supporting cast, were also there in support of MACHETE.

 
The unveiling took place at the historic Orpheum Theatre to a packed house of ecstatic moviegoers. The blockbuster potential of MACHETE was given further credence by the audience reaction, which bordered on hysteria during big scenes.

In conjunction with the release of MACHETE tomorrow, September 3, 2010 (in theaters nationwide), two very special artists - David Choe and Mister Cartoon - were called upon to craft up their own MACHETE masterpieces. SA Studios orchestrated a true meeting of the minds when it introduced Machete star Danny Trejo to world-renowned visual artist David Choe. Inspired by Danny’s iconic face, David Choe crafted original poster art based on Machete as a tribute. SA Studios was on-hand to capture this unique pairing and document the creation of David Choe’s original Machete art. World famous tattoo artist/muralist, Mister Cartoon, also contributed brilliant MACHETE-inspired artwork in tribute to his longtime friend, Danny Trejo.

Finally found the HKS coil pack/spark plug cover garnish. Also found the first gen HKS purple oil cap too. Had to bug two ex-HKS employees to part with their goodies. I ended up shaving off the lettering on the SR20DET valve cover and painting it the old HKS splash livery. It's that old funky purple and green theme they ahd on their drag cars, motor oil cans, and brake fluids. Hopefully the hi-temp paint holds up. Super Street's S13 is coming back!

Umm, Where's My Wheel? We Demo Forza 3 Motorsport with Microsoft Kinect

The racing game genre has taken some big steps these last few years. Car selection, graphics rendering, and the number of available circuits have come a long way since the dawn of the original Gran Turismo. But now things are about to change pretty drastically. It’s time for the next big thing in virtual racing: motion sensing technology.

Microsoft is one of the first companies to join racing with motion tech thanks to its Forza franchise, Xbox 360, and newly debuted Kinectic system (think Wii but without wires or controllers). The combo was revealed a few days ago at this year’s E3 gaming expo in LA, and being the cool suckahs that we are, we snagged a quick private demo courtesy of Turn 10 Studios, the developers responsible for everything Forza.

Turn 10 creative director Dan Greenawalt (also known as the father of Forza) first showed us what he called the “Passing Mode.” To control the demo’s Ferrari 458 Italia around slower Ford Fiestas and Honda Fits, users face the TV and Kinect reader, hold their hands in the normal 10 and 2 o’clock positions (no ghost riding or one handed gangsta leaning here), and steer using nothing but coordinated hand movements.

It’s trippy the first time, especially if you’re a regular gamer used to actual force feedback wheels or controllers. Amazingly, Kinect’s radar, 3D cameras, and facial recognition ware knew precisely where our hands were and controlled the Ferrari with descent responsiveness. We even had Dai make funny faces and run around behind to try to throw it all off. It didn’t flake out one bit. Just don’t cross you arms or flail them like you’ve spotted Godzilla. If you do that, your virtual Italian Stallion will go yee-haw into a barrier.

Turn 10 didn’t include throttle or brake controls in order to keep it simple for first time users and for people like us -- gamers that want something easy and entertaining to do when they have buddies around (yes, we have buddies). The setup isn’t meant for the ultimate racing experience. Well, not yet anyway.

Greenawalt next showed us another demo called the “Car Experience”. This one places the Ferrari 458 Italia on Utah’s Salt Flats. The objective is to take an in-depth tour of the car, both inside and outside. Again, users face the screen, but this time, move their bodies to change points of view around and inside the car. Forget heading to the car dealer – the on-screen details are immaculate.

Turn 10 says a Kinetic compatible version of Forza should be out in 2011 when the next installment arrives. By then, expect a few more tweaks to make it into already impressive motion control program. - Nate Martinez

Let's Battle! The 2010 Castrol Syntec Top Car Challenge Is Up and Running!

Who's ready to see the fastest modified street cars go head-to-head in an all-out competition to see who will come out on top? We certainly are. We're proud to announce the return of the popular Castrol Syntec Top Car Challenge series for 2010, which places Source Interlink Media's tuner titles against one another to see which magazine - and their car of choice - can really turn it out. It's us versus them, them meaning Import Tuner, Modified, Honda Tuning, eurotuner and 5.0 Mustang - and we're ready to kick some ass.

Our entry for this year's competition is no stranger to racing, the time attack arena in particular. Boost Logic's sleek black Toyota Supra is one of the fastest Limited FR/street class cars we've had the pleasure of seeing compete in our Super Lap Battle, so we thought, "Hey, why not?" The car's quick, looks the part and is damn consistent. Its 2JZ is a monster, sporting Boost Logic's own turbo kit and fuel system but is also quite nimble thanks to its fully dialed-in suspension. You can't deny it looks great with the Modellista aero components, which help lighten the car tremendously. We're confident this is the car that will finally bring us our first Castrol Syntec Top Car Challenge victory.
