What They Can’t See Won’t Hurt You

Playing Hide And Seek With Your Nitrous Kit

Photography by

The original intent was to find out how the pros did it. I was gonna get the scoop and tell you a few secrets. But now you’re going to get a little more than that. You’re gonna learn how to do it yourself. Laughing gas, mellowing agent, nitrous oxide—whatever they call it, you like it. Cops hate it. So what do you do when you need a little extra horsepower on tap? You make it disappear into thin air so to speak with a little creativity. Autolink wants to help you get away from “the man,” and what better way to do so than with a hidden nitrous kit? Follow along as Autolink’s chief mechanic, Chris Hansen, gives us a few pointers on how to sneak away when we need to with a little bit of squeeze. Our subject for the day: Brandon Gee’s ’96 Civic EX.

Disclaimer: We in no way endorse the idea of your engaging in any sort of illegal speed contest or speeding away from the cops at any given time. The idea here is more to gain an edge over your competition at a sanctioned drag race. Be safe and keep the kid stuff off the streets.

Disconnect the battery and remove it from the engine bay. There is also a bottom bracket for the battery that you should remove, as well. That particular area works well for the car that we have chosen for this install, so that we can hide the nitrous solenoids underneath the fuse-box area.

Sand down a small area on the sidewall to create a more solid contact for the nitrous solenoid ground wire. The aluminum bracket to which you will mount the solenoids to the sidewall might not ground as well as the chassis’ sheetmetal.

You can custom–fabricate an aluminum mounting bracket for a small amount of pocket change from your local hardware store. The kit does not include this bracket and, of course, this is a hidden nitrous system, so be creative!

It may take a few tries to run the line, so having a little patience is key. Run the microswitch power line and the power toggle switch line through the firewall (same passage as nitrous line), as well.

If you have a front strut brace, remove it. Remove the factory intake/performance intake pipe from the throttle body. Our project vehicle had an aftermarket intake pipe, so we used a 15/64 drill bit to create a hole for the nitrous fitting. You need to make sure that you drill in front of the air sensor as not to damage any sensor readings. Make sure that this hole is approximately 5 inches away from the throttle body.

Hot tip: If you have access to compressed air, use it to blow out the metallic shavings left over from drilling. This will prevent any left over metallic shavings from being sucked up into the intake manifold, which could harm your engine.

Connect the intake manifold and fuel pressure regulator lines to the fuel pressure regulator tee-fitting. Use a plastic clip to tie the FPR line and zip-ties for the vacuum lines. Make sure you secure the lines out of the throttle body’s way. Install a nitrous jet into the vacuum line going to the intake manifold.

Connect the nitrous fitting onto the intake pipe. Make sure that you position it correctly so that the nitrous shoots towards the throttle body. Tighten the fitting down with both a 10mm and a 7/16 wrench. Reinstall the intake pipe and air filter.

Now it’s time to hide your activation switch (turns the system on). Put it wherever you like because you’re the only one who’s going to know how to activate your hidden nitrous kit. We chose to mount the switch behind the center armrest.

  • 1996 Honda EJ8 Civic Interior View Center Console
Your nitrous kit won’t include a nitrous power button (controls when the nitrous is activated) like the one shown here, so you’ll have to purchase one separately or use the microswitch that is included. We mounted it under the center console and wrapped the wiring with black wire loom. This button can be tucked under the console to maintain its hidden identity.

Hiding the nitrous bottle can be sneaky, too, and will be left up to you to decide on where to hide it. Keep in mind that a Sneaky Pete nitrous bottle from NOS might not have enough pressure to go from the trunk to the engine compartment so somewhere closer would work well. Mount the nitrous bottle per NOS’ instructions with the NOS label facing upward. Install a fresh set of spark plugs, preferably NGK BCPR7ES-11. Make sure to adjust your timing by starting at 2 degrees retarded (to prevent detonation) from stock timing and tune your way up from there.0
