Suspension and brakes are the two most important things for any car trying to make it on the track. With the Öhlins coilovers done, it was now time for me to attack the brakes. A simple and easy upgrade on any year 240SX are the factory brakes off of the Z32 300ZX. A more expensive upgrade are the Brembo brakes from either a Z33 350Z or a R34 GT-R. Not being able to afford either of those, I managed to find a cheaper Brembo solution that's growing in popularity with 240SX owners. A mismatch combo of parts will allow me to use STI and Evo Brembo brakes without any modifications. Along with this I had to do a 5-lug conversion that's been long overdue.

  • Brake Yo Self Front Calipers
The inside of the front calipers needed to be shaved down a bit in order for the brackets to work.

  • Brake Yo Self 5 Lug Hubs
To bolt on the rear STI calipers, I needed the Z32 300ZX ebrake assembly with the 5-lug hubs. It's basically like doing the 300ZX rear brake upgrade except using STI Brembo calipers.

Because my car was 4-lug, I had to drop some money at the dealer for some new S14 5-lug hubs.

  • Brake Yo Self Rotors
This setup allowed me to use huge Evo front rotors and 300ZX rears rotors. Instead of using crappy blanks, EBC USR slotted rotors were chosen to help dissipate heat.

  • Brake Yo Self Brake Lines
Cyber Auto sent me Techna Fit stainless braided brake lines for the conversion. As always, Cyber Auto only carries the best brands. These come covered in a plastic shield (clear, blue or red) to protect from dirt and debris. The ends are swiveled so you can install them with calipers already bolted on the car.

  • Brake Yo Self Master Cylinder
A 1 1/16'' master cylinder from a Z32 300ZX was added to feed the new calipers with enough fluid. The center plug on the master cylinder must be removed and a new fitting has to be pressed inside. Brake lines must also be bent to fit on a S14. On a S13, the lines don't need to be bent.

I can't believe how well this car brakes now. The pedal is firm but you can still modulate it. The master cylinder (which contains the proportioning) and rear brakes were an absolute must. Hard braking doesn't nose dive the car either; it stays flat and solid. Getting into friends' cars are now dangerous for me. I tend to brake too late now as I've grown use to my Brembo awesomeness.
