Road To Superlap Bumper

Although the obvious goal of building a time attack car is speed, we at Super Street have to hold up our reputation as purveyors of style. There are lots of fast time attack cars that look downright wack and let's face it, I ain't goin' out like that. Since I shredded my SiR lip off the front of my car several times, I've been driving Leroy around with no front lip for some time now... and the car looks miserable without one. Rather than continuing to punish myself by driving around a goofy-looking hatch, I decided to fix the problem with the help of a Seibon carbon piece. Sit back, relax, and enjoy while I show you how to go about mounting one of these puppies.

So I ripped my bumper off and I'm not going to tell you how. If you can't figure out how to get yours off, just pay someone to install the lip-it will be well above your head. The idea here is to get the lip which isn't pre-drilled to mount to the bumper via OEM hardware (which I already had, but you will need to purchase).

  • Road To Superlap Clamp
Since the bumper and lip aren't exactly solid items, they need to be secured to each other so you can mark the location of the holes to be drilled. I used two A-clamps. If you don't have A-clamps, get creative.

  • Road To Superlap Paint Pen
Paint pen marks the location of the hole... this should be pretty self-explanatory.
  • Road To Superlap Drill
To keep the drill bit from wandering I started the holes with a small bit to create a guide hole. This isn't a required step, but I highly recommend it. Unless you have some sort of laser-guided drill bit technology that has been sent back in time to destroy John Connor.

Now penetrate that little hole with a bigger shaft! That sounded great!
  • Road To Superlap Posing
Time to get dangerous! After I test-fit the lip I noticed there were a few areas where excess material was causing a less-than-perfect fit, so I needed to remove that material with an angle grinder. Also of note this is the same equipment I use when someone blows up the bathroom here at the office.

  • Road To Superlap Dusting
This is why I was wearing the respirator and goggles-carbon fiber dust goes everywhere! I don't know if it's toxic or not, but it's certainly not good to breathe in. If you look really hard you can see the yellow line I drew on the lip marking the area that needed to be cut.

Here is the lip all bolted up. You can see that the lip now clears the edge of the bumper perfectly.

And here is the lip on Leroy... what an improvement! The lip hangs a bit lower than I had anticipated and it pretty much scrapes everywhere, but it looks totally kick ass. I'll get some better pics for you guys soon. That's it for now!
